Ok, thank you. Just one more thing: where can I run .rule files? Both lifeviewer and golly (or at least the webapp version of golly) can't run .rule.
LifeViewer needs the .rule file to have its contents pasted into a wiki page to work, for example Rule:WireWorld lets it run WireWorld.
Golly Web (I think it's called Molly?) can't run ruletables. The standalone app can (copy the contents and paste it into Golly).
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring

Udiprod made a video about firing squad sychronization. The rules governing that are similar to that of 1D CA. Could a ruletable be made that simulates this?
B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

Could you help me fix my HighBrew rule table?
The replicator doesn't work.
Thanks.

I have reduced the glider cost of quadratic growth to eight and probably to seven. Looking for conduits...

Here is a conventional modulo-2/XOR diagonal margolus rule:

Code: Select all

x = 50, y = 61, rule = B2e/S

I've decided to try taking on the modulo 5 version. Progress was going good, but I've ended up hitting a wall.

Code: Select all

the pattern reaches a state that violates the paradigm of any generation of a margolus oscillator being the modulo of multiple overlaid rectangles:

poses a different problem - said transition is present in the exact same position at the exact same time for all four oscillators, violating the fact that all four alive state types should be functionally identical/interchangeable given that 5 is prime. As such, all four oscillators, which should evolve identically but with switched cell states, end up evolving completely differently:

A rule where

Code: Select all

3o2b3o2b3o3b2o2bobo2b2o3b3o2b3o$obo2bobo4bo2bobo2bobo2bobo2bo4bobo$obo3b2o2b3o2b3o2b3o2b3o2b3o2b2o!
are the eight (I don't know what to call them. Stages? Periods?)of the oscillator.

Hi I'm interested in a rule with several states...

color gate blue
color gate red
color gate green
color gate white
color gate yellow
color gate live blue
color gate live red
color gate live green
color gate live white
color gate live yellow
live cell blue
live cell red
live cell green
live cell white
live cell yellow
wall (from lifehistory)

So, when a live cell is birthed on a color gate, it instead births a color gate live, which when it dies, it leaves a color gate. If it births a cell, it is the color of the color gate.

...also, sorry for the super-long post.

See Tutorials/Creating_custom_rules. If you have specific questions about the tutorial, ask them in the thread for basic questions.

I accidentally answered a question from the previous page of posts, but some of the information seems useful, so I guess I'll leave it here:

... where can I run .rule files? Both lifeviewer and golly (or at least the webapp version of golly) can't run .rule.
You're probably better off having a copy of (non-web-app) Golly available to test a rule while it's under development. It's a little awkward to do all the development and testing through LifeViewer.

For LifeViewer to recognize a rule name, the rule will have to be added to the LifeWiki Rules namespace, as described here. It will probably run a bit faster if it has a @TREE section as well as a @TABLE section, so that link describes how to produce the @TREE section once you have the @TABLE section.

However, if you upload a rule with just a @TABLE section to the LifeWiki Rules namespace, it will still work in LifeViewer, just not as fast in some cases.

What about a rule where light speed ships exist but patterns don't explode like crazy like in Seeds?
B2acn/S, I think. The only thing about this rule is that replicators form from random soups, but they stablize themselves onto period-2 oscillators, so they won't interact again once they've stablized. Sample soup:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 30, rule = B2acn/S

this is what i think you mean...
This might need a little more work. Wouldn't the state-2 cells go back to state 1 after every two cycles? The extra ON state might be needed only to distinguish even from odd generations.

I'm thinking that the rule should run at half speed compared to Life, and should add the birth cells in the odd generations. Then the new births as well as the previously existing cells should be used to calculate survival or non-survival.

(The rule specification could definitely have been written more clearly.)

I intended it so that every tick, all state 1 cells turn to state two, then all surviving state two cells become state one, and the cycle continues.

That's what it looked like, but like I said it needs a little more work. When I run let's say

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = Birthdeath-life
3A$A$.A!
... which I'll put into LifeViewer's "None" rule so that it can be displayed...

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 3, rule = None
3A$A$.A!
#C [[ THUMBNAIL THUMBSIZE 3 ]]
I get this at T=1:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = None
.A$3B$B.A$.B!
#C [[ THUMBNAIL THUMBSIZE 3 ]]
and then this at T=2:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = None
.A$3B$A.A$.B!
#C [[ THUMBNAIL THUMBSIZE 3 ]]
... and then the pattern goes stable.

Edit 2: P4...
It might be better to quote these as "rule = B3/S012345678|B/S23", or else just use "rule = Birthdeath-life" now that it's in the LifeWiki Rules namespace.

The Birthdeath-life rule does the birth first, then determines survival, so the original form of your alternating rule is equivalent to starting from an odd generation number.

What do you mean? You think there are no spaceships? (I do too!) You think there will be a non-nothing prize?

I have no idea if this is explosive, dies out quickly, or what. It's Seeds, except only 4 of the 8 B2a transitions, rotationally symmetric, are enabled. This can be done with a MAP string, but I couldn't find a way to convert pure binary to Base64 encoding, only text to Base64.
