I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

Well, apgsearch is useful, but for people who can't apgsearch (like me), all I really do is running a ctrl5 soup, then changing the rule a little by a time with a script (not by me). When I find something that I want to keep in the end rule, I just copy paste-it aside from the soup, and while I'm changing the rule, if the rule makes the interesting pattern evolve in a bad way, I just go back to the rule before. Other search programs are also useful, like rlifesrc, but that is usually slower at finding ships than ntzfind and qfind.

My advice may take some time and practice. If you interact with the rule for long enough, by colliding ships with various still lifes, placing still lifes around reactions, you can get familiar with the rule and notice if any catalysts appear. You may find that one still life can eat a spaceship, or that another one reflects a r-pentomino to another location, and make it into a shuttle.

Similarly you can try placing oscillators and puffers next to each other in various positions. Maybe you will find a gun/rake, or maybe two puffers can be stabilized into a ship with a unique speed or properties. It all depends on rule’s potential and how much effort you put into finding interesting discoveries.

Finally don’t be afraid to take the opportunity to learn some python or another scripting language, then writing a small script. It is a useful skill which can make exploring OCA much more fruitful. Just consider sharing your script with others afterwards, you never know who else could benefit from it.
