Generations Variants of CGOL

A while ago I decided to explore Generations versions of Conway's Game of Life with a higher number of states (I.E. rule "23/3/3"),
the interest being that the rule would behave simillarly to Conway's Game of Life (having the same still lives, a p3 variant of the beacon, etc.),
the exception being it would be limited in how soon living cells could replace dead cells, making interesting patterns hard to find.

I decided to settle for 23/3/3 because it was the first degree of separation from base CGOL, making it most likely to be similar in diversity.
Fuddling around with random soups produced a relatively common 2c/7 spaceship:

The next logical avenue of exploration to me would be to search for a breeder, however given the sparse nature of the rule it would likely have to be very engineered, meaning I would first have to find a rake.
The issue here lies in that while base CGOL has simple, extremely common spaceships in the form of gliders, the most simple spaceships in 23/3/3 are rare and hard to synthesize, and are generally only produced by very chaotic patterns.

I am contemplating designing a search algorithm to search for a way to manipulate the puffer output to produce spaceships, and wanted to ask if it would make sense to make a post on the scripts forum to ask for guidance in doing so. I apologize if I am mistaken, but I cant find my puffer or any puffer for that matter in that database, although I may be missing something in the navigation of the website you linked to. I found the three c4 diagonal spaceships very interesting.

Either way I don't think a quadratic growth pattern has been found in this rule and that is what I am very much interested in. If there aren't any other databases for the rule and the puffer is actually indeed new (which I could be mistaken) I feel like the puffer could help make new progress in finding a breeder.

There was an old thread about this rule, though it didn't get very far and I'm not going to blame you for not posting in it, since "23/3/3" is pretty much impossible to search.

The website Hunting linked is called Catagolue, and you should very much learn about it and contribute to it if possible (I don't want to explain it any further, go check on the wiki: Catagolue)

Anyways, I think Hunting is being a bit harsh here, and the puffer you posted is indeed new. Welcome to the forums, and how did you find it?

I found the tagalong when I noticed an interaction where a c/2 spaceship could almost drag the front most pair of cells of a still life forward. I realized that I could prevent the sideways growth that was preventing it from fully doing so by mirroring the pattern. I ended up with something that was not quite a wickstretcher:

Then all I needed to do was have some spaceship perturb the smoke trailing behind the tagalong and I had created the puffer.


Other than that, I wanted to ask, do you think it would be a good idea to make a post about finding rakes in the scripts forum? I'm trying to find the best approach for algorithmically searching for a way to modify the puffer into a rake.

Since this rule is as popular as Generations, obviously, these trivial objects have been found many times before. At the very least, the blockhauler and the 2c/5 spaceship interactions (but not the tagalong) are in my pattern collection of my early pattern collection (i. e. the computer I used when I got started in CA) sitting along with stuff life 1/1/5. This should demonstrate any inexperienced user can discover them independently.

You're supposed to post your discoveries in threads like this one before carelessly creating new threads, only for the new threads to become inactive after a week or so (if I were Freywa I would say, "and waste the server space", but no.)

Must you be so antagonistic constantly? You say 'if I were Freywa', yet you display significantly more of that style of behavior than he does. I remember you not knowing how to do a lot of things at first, yet you come in bullying every new person that doesn't display complete knowledge of practices and patterns in specific rules around here.

Just stop.
Wildmyron and I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules.

- Find a (7,1)c/8 ship in a Non-totalistic rule

Given that you're more familiar with practices and patterns do you think I should start a new thread in scripts or do you recommend a preexisting forum to ask for help in? I expect I will need a lot of back and forth if I want to iron out how I should implement a search algorithm.

How general is the algorithm you have in mind? If it's something that can be generally applied to a lot of rules I think making a separate thread in Scripts sounds appropriate (though I'm not a mod so that's not a definitive judgment).

I don't have a specific algorithm in mind, so much as I want to ask what the best algorithmic approach is to converting the puffer to a rake, which now that I say that out loud I think may be pretty specific to the rule. Do you think I should keep asking in this thread or do you recommend a preexisting thread in which to ask this question?

How about an OCA mirror of gencols? It seems to help a lot of such projects in the past, but only for CGoL.

I'm thinking it'd probably be best to start a new thread in the Scripts forum, if only because then your question will have more visibility to the people that can help you with it. This specific use case may be pretty local to this rule, but I'd be surprised if any approach you'd have to take to solve it algorithmically doesn't have a wider application.

Now that I know that the construction of rakes is possible, some next steps would be to find a way to create longer period rakes, possibly using c/2 spaceships of periods other than p28. Another idea would be to use search algorithms to find a smaller version of this rake.

It would also be useful to search for spaceship synthesis for infinite growth patterns like the original puffer.
