Re: Non-totalistic CA Growth Challenge

Ok so clearly calcyman wins here with engineered patterns, but here's a natural pattern with FI 1017015 and Fig index 135.819: x = 14, y = 2, rule = B2-ae3-ik4ai5a6ai78/S2a3-j4a5aijn6acn78 obob2ob3o2b2o$2b3o2bobob2o! Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread

Not sure if this is known, because I don't really know where to look for this kind of stuff except for jslife, but here's a nice 180-degree reflection that preserves the mod-4 timing of a glider, allowing for a simple, minimal-population shuttle: x = 67, y = 128, rule = B3/S23 12bo$12bo5b3o$11bobo3b...

Re: Life-Related Dreams

I just had a dream where I found a reaction that created a large p2 and p3 oscillator but then I thought "this is crazy... wait, maybe it's not real, yeah this is a dream" and then I woke up and the word "dream" sort of echoed through my mind until I looked at my alarm clock.

I have a soft spot for this kind of thing, but I'd like to nominate the p148 B29 gun completed by AbhpzTa, Dave Greene, and Adam P. Goucher. EDIT: I'd additionally like to nominate the 39-glider synthesis of sufficiently large odd N-bit still lifes by Tanner Jacobi, Adam P. Goucher, and Chris Cain, ...

Re: Construction practice

Okay, this is getting to the point where the problem is clearly too much reliance on one rather awkward shape of gun. Here are a couple of possible alternatives to stir things up a little bit... I don't know if you noticed, but I already used the second gun in the upper quadrants with an optimized ...

That MWSS on MWSS #1 synth is impressive, but I think the LWSS on LWSS synth could possibly be reduced further by synthesizing the HF+TL combo in this earlier 6-glider synthesis with 3 gliders: x = 15, y = 24, rule...

Thanks for giving such a detailed response! It's pretty interesting that the sequence occurs in an almost-similar form, but not quite. I didn't know that there was already discussion about this particular sequence, I should've probably searched harder.

I constructed a p197 copperhead gun and attempted to optimize for bounding box; I spent more time on it than guns that I've built before, but I'm wondering what else I could do to make it smaller. Re: Thread for basic questions

Apologies for not necessarily being a "basic" question, but in the rule B2-a3-i/S01c, there exists a set of diagonal oscillators, the periods of which follow the following unusual sequence: 6, 4, 14, 14, 12, 62, 4, 126, 28, 30, 30, 28, 1022, 24, 126, 124, 4094 I couldn't find it on OEIS, does anyone...

But in all seriousness, I interpreted it to be a hard then soft c, as in "kæl-si-mæn" (I don't know if that's the correct IPA translation but the c sounds are correct)
