Re: Stable glider advancer

A syringe hooked up to a compatible SE-19 might do the trick but I can't see any in the latest converter collection. Seems like it would be hard to get advancers that way, though you could certainly build a composite SE-19 that would delay a glider by various numbers of ticks. Seems like if you wan...

Re: How about searching light speed signals with various speed?

We can find a lot of spaceships have various speed, direction and periods in CGOL. Like diagonal 2c3, 5c9, c2 signal gabriel posted in his site . Why other lightspeed signals aren't? Welcome back! "Lightspeed" might not be the word you're looking for, since that means the fixed speed of 1 cell per ...

Re: Still-life 'factories'

H to eater1 and two blocks. Are there any known examples of H to eater1 before? Don't think so, except for composite mechanisms that build an eater with two gliders. There's a p6 Herschel conduit with a transient eater in it -- Fx177p6 -- which could be converted to a not-terribly-useful H-to-eater...

Re: Oscillator Discoveries Thread

My copy of the dr documentation is very messy for some reason. I haven't gone back and looked at dr documentation, so this is just a quick crackpot theory: are you opening a .txt file using Windows Notepad, by any chance? Unix-style line endings aren't supported by the old standard Notepad, so ever...

Re: Construction practice

But if your intention was to make G->Loafer your output loafer is intersecting one of the input gliders stream, thus closing some input gliders, and there is no real reason for it. So I would start the improvement from directing the input streams in a way they don't intersect the output loafer. Yes...

Script that calculates a number of gliders to be fired at a selected pattern to yield a non-zero number of spaceships, no static ash (so 0 still lifes, 0 oscillators... only spaceships) I've put my oar in about this request before , but here's another attempt: If the request is "find the minimum nu...

Removing two bottommost gliders results nothing. Has to be a single glider, I take it. The top left glider can be removed: x = 111, y = 127, rule = B3/S23 bo$2bo$3o3$24bo$25bo$23b3o3$33bo$34bo$32b3o3$85bo$85bobo6bo$85b2o6bo$ 93b3o2$47bo$48bo$46b3o3$52bo$53bo36bo$51b3o36bobo$90b2o2$67bo12bo$67bo bo1...

Re: Gardens of Eden

Here's a periodic parent that solves that case... Huh, nice. So probably there's a similar periodic trick for all the 3x3 cases -- there really aren't very many, after all -- but not for some 4x3 and 4x4 cases. 2x3 is not mentioned in the list of "non-squares to be investigated", but I suppose it's...

Notes on periodic GoEs. 3x3 : It seems no 3x3 tile can become a GoE. 3x4 : Indeed possible, as shown by Gamedziner. Non-squares to be investigated: 2x4, 2x5, 2x6, 3x4, 2x7 and 3x5... Re: Made a Unit Cell grid creator for Game of Life

Created a python garbage, which converts an rle format GoL pattern file to rle format embedding the pattern into a grid of unit cells made by David Bell. Each unit cell has a size of 500x500. See also metafier.py, and metafier.lua in Golly 2.8, which does the same trick for a selected pattern using...

Re: Thread for basic questions

I don't think that apgsearch removes duplicate soups, partly because it is hard and partly because nobody really needs it. The probability that even one duplicate soup has already occurred is very low (I am too lazy to calculate it right now, but I can do it if you ask). And even if it occurs, it w...

User testitemqlstudop has proposed a CA question-gathering Q&A site on Stack Exchange. I still have a completely arbitrary goal of a hundred D...

Two new soups for the copperhead... The latter one of those allows this predecessor, which may (translation: probably won't) make for a slightly cheaper synthesis... Not that I really know what I'm talking about, but that does look kind of promising. It's basically a dock (four gliders? Too bad it'...

Re: Remember the good old days?

Do you guys remember the good old days when we had to use python scripts to apgsearch and a 1M soup haul was amazing? I think that even the first Catagolue-compatible version of apgsearch had a default of 5M soups per haul... 1M soup hauls did still seem impressive, though, getting generated so fas...

Re: 15 in 15: Efficient 15-bit Synthesis Project (DONE!)

The analysis code (which I haven't yet posted) knows nothing about "components". You need to pass in separate instantiations of every single version of a particular component. e.g. rle for "add tail to tub", "add tail to up boat", "add tail to down boat", "add tail to up barge", etc, etc, etc... I ...

Re: Screen Grab or export Script for each generation

But it won't take a lot of changes to the script to generalize it to export N generations of whatever pattern is currently in the Golly universe. Would that be helpful? Again, the only version of Golly that will run this script at the moment is a beta version, Golly 2.9b1. I wouldn't mind trying it...

Re: 2c? If only?

Since most CA have an 8-cell boundary which a cell can interact with, why not develop a 24-cell boundary which can interact with two cells ahead of itself and as such up the limit to 2c? Well... if "c", lightspeed, is defined as the fastest speed that a signal can travel in a given CA, then 2c is s...

Re: LifeWiki Did-You-Knows

I think #3 is technically out of date. However, that's debatable. I added the "and combinations thereof" phrase just recently, in an effort to up-to-date-ify that one. What am I forgetting that's come out of nonsymmetric soups, that isn't basically a combination of switch engines? As far as non-c/1...
