Re: Game of Life Links
I've uploaded a list of links to LifeWiki to avoid the middle man that is this thread: http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/index.php?title=LifeWiki:Life_links As such, I propose keeping that list as the list of "good links" (whatever that means), and this thread can be used for posting any links (your ow...

Re: Natural spaceships beyond the glider and *WSS's ?
The Oscar script supplied with Golly can find oscillators, including spaceships & knightships. Is there a (feasible) way to modify the script so that it can detect gliders in the presence of other stuff? For example, if you run the R-pentomino under that script it goes forever because hashes never ...

Re: Census Program Idea
I'd of course be willing to lend my server to a task like this, though I'm not sure I'm familiar enough with Python/Perl and/or the relevant coding techniques to actually make a program that would do something like has been suggested here. What I'd much prefer to see would be a depth-first search of...

Re: Natural spaceships beyond the glider and *WSS's ?
Are any other spaceships or puffers known to occur naturally, apart from the 4 standard spaceships and the 2 switch engines? And Could a program be made that detects all spaceships given off by random starting patterns? Achim Flammenkamp did some searches ( results ) but didn't find a single occurr...

Very nice. Re: New breeder, made myself!
PS: It would be cool if the webmaster could make an RLE tag so that small patterns could be run in JavaScript. For example, if my pattern was smaller, you could replace code with [rle]. Hrm... I'll add that to the to-do list because it'd be pretty cool, but I imagine that if it happens it'll be a w...

Has anything been done regarding patterns from strings of digits, since the first 2 posts at http://pentadecathlon.com/lifeNews/restricted_patterns/ ? The LifeWiki also sems to be missing a page on this, would it be worthwhile creating one? This is actually on my personal to-do list for the wiki ri...

Re: Spaceship speed limits
Hmm... I wonder if this proof idea could be emulated for other rules. Some of them clearly have higher speed limits, and others presumably have lower. I was wondering the same thing. The proof only seems to rely on the fact that "3" is a birth condition, "0", "1" and "2" are not a birth conditions,...

Have you exhausted the 3-by-8 rectangles? That is, do we know that 3-by-9 is minimal?

Re: Superstrings for diagonal lightspeed signals?
...I see a superstring gun as a done deal if that LWSS formation can be synthesized. It can, and it's not difficult to do (4 gliders per LWSS since the 3-glider syntheses all seem to require gliders coming from various different directions): x = 24, y = 21, rule = B3/S23 3bobo$4b2o$4bo5$8bo$6bobo$7...

Version beta 0.9.0 was uploaded today. The following changes since beta 0.8.2 have been made: Some minor graphical glitch fixes. The box at the bottom-right of the page used to sometimes only appear as a blue box with no controls on it. I believe that this is now fixed. The auto-loading via querystr...

Over the past few weeks, I've found quite a few new oscillators in 2x2. However, I don't know how to add them to the collection on the 2x2 page. I've added the collection to this post. I'll add those tonight or tomorrow, thanks. The 10-cell still life count for 2x2 completed today as well (the fina...

Well I got my new computer built yesterday, so now it's running the 10-cell counts for both 2x2 and maze. My semester finishes up later this week so I'll hopefully have more time for coding in the near future.

To make it grow quadratically, you would also need something that creates switch engines on the fly, correct? I don't know off-hand of any such pattern.

Re: One cell thick patterns.
I modified the script to detect escaping gliders (this is a preliminary approach). The shortest patterns that produce escaping gliders are the following two 15-bit patterns: OOO · OOOOO · OOOOO (and its mirror image) 13 cells. It runs for 522 generations. Final population: 150 cells. (4 gliders). O...

Re: Enumerating Still Lifes (in C)
Could the script be altered to enumerate small oscillators in various rules? Nope, I'm afraid it could not. An oscillator script might use some of the same elements (maybe), but it would have to be fundamentally different. The script as-is basically goes through and checks the stability of every ce...

Re: Enumerating Still Lifes (in C)
OK, I've uploaded a new version of the script that automatically weeds out pseudo still lifes as it calculates using the method I described earlier (ie. it uses the "two stables subgroups = pseudo still life" definition). I'm currently re-running the 8-cell maze count to double check the number that...
