Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose
Alternate back edges to the recent c/4 diagonal puffer engine with slightly different sparks could give variant puffer engines that behave differently. Here are two related partial results, the first probably being easier to solve, but the second giving a more resilient engine: x = 168, y = 29, rule...

Just a few minutes later one of the other searches dropped this: #C [[ TRACK -1/4 -1/4 ]] x = 74, y = 102, rule = B3/S23 28b2o$28bobo$28bo$31bo$31b2o$31b2o$30b2o$26b2ob2o$26bo4bo$26bob4o$30b 2o$31bo$30b2o$26b4obo2bo$25b2obobobo$27bo4b3o27b2o$50b3o9bobo$32bo17bo 2b3o6bo9bo$7b3o41bobo16b2obo$7bo22b2o...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose
I guess it just seems rather hemmed in, stuck searching upward, and subjectively the rate at which search results were lengthening with widening windows seemed poor. Alas it's crummy subjective metrics all the way down. I feel like it wouldn't be too hard to move that center branch out of the way o...

Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread
I don't think this is useful, but the smoke can reflect a glider (of course, the glider would need to be placed there very precisely): x = 74, y = 102, rule = B3/S23 28b2o$28bobo$28bo$31bo$31b2o$31b2o$30b2o$26b2ob2o$26bo4bo$26bob4o$30b 2o$31bo$30b2o$26b4obo2bo$25b2obobobo$27bo4b3o27b2o$50b3o9bobo$3...

Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose
That sparker with that clearance is quite demanding. Some preliminary searches (8 GB) do find longish partials but they don't look very nice to me (mostly wide and mostly getting wider as they go), e.g.: x = 74, y = 53, rule = B3/S23 28b2o$27b2o$29bo$31b2o$30bo2$29bo2bo$26b2obo$25b2o4bo$27bobo2bo$3...

Here's an idea for a p12 c/4 diagonal backrake that might be possible, but it would require the discovery of multiple, likely difficult components: x = 265, y = 57, rule = B3/S23 28b2o68b2o68b2o68b2o$27b2o68b2o68b2o68b2o$29bo69bo69bo69bo$31b2o68b2o 68b2o68b2o$30bo69bo69bo69bo2$29bo2bo66bo2bo66bo2bo...

Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread
Here's some detail on how I found the recent puffer engine, for those who are curious. The partial result posted here was found with JLS . I first tried to find a puffer that emits a 4-line (beehive predecessor). Nothing I tried was working. I then remembered how a pre-TL can sometimes interact with...

Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread
Here is a diagonal c/4 period 52 rake Wonderful! When I first found the engine, I was excited to see that it seemed to have a base period of 52 and was hopeful that such a rake could be constructed. It turned out more difficult than I anticipated. I took the liberty of compacting the components of ...

For the same reason that Antonin believes they should be posted in a separate thread. I didn't, and still don't, understand those reasons. I would probably need it explained in a different way. Right now I don't see how the c/4 diagonal posts negatively impacts the posting of other content. Also, i...

Re: Spaceship Discussion Thread
Here is a pretty dirty diagonal c/4 period 52 based puffer, at least near the engine. I haven't looked at taming the exhaust. Big glider can provide a functionally equivalent spark while giving a bit more room for sparkers at the back: x = 80, y = 62, rule = B3/S23 27b3o$27bo$28bo$30b2o$31bo2$28bo$...

I also believe that the c/4d technology should be moved to another thread, but refused to say it on the forums until someone else posted about it. The c/4d technology posts currently in the Spaceship Discussion thread should be kept there, but the new ones should go in a new thread Can you give mor...

The one front branch is easy, even with okayish clearance... And the second branch wasn't that bad either. Well usually we see a variety of speeds being posted, like c/2o, c/3o, 2c/5o, c/5d etc., but now it's just one speed, and that's c/4d. I don't see how the c/4 diagonal discussion would prevent other speeds from being posted. This thread is usually fairly inactive until some new result spawns a flur...

Can you give more details on why? I'm still not convinced there is a problem with the current situation. I'd also be interested to hear from anyone else.
By the way, when this is resolved I'll move all this meta-discussion somewhere else.

Guys, shouldn"t all of this c/4 diagonal technology be moved to a separate thread? Is that something people want? I don't personally see the problem with the current situation. Re: amling questionable searches/ideas firehose
A p20 c/4d spaceship might be possible by modifying the p28 puffer. Here is a way that a spark could theoretically be provided at c/4d that would result in a p20 spaceship: Is there some trick to finding these things? Is it just guess and check by simulating in golly, sparking by hand? Yes, guess a...

Here's a p24 rake: Packed: Beehive-to-ship-to-loaf-to-loaf-to-glider is a rather roundabout way to get there, but it gets the job done. Excellent! I confess I don't follow how we'd expect 84 = 3x28 or 108 = 3x36 as they're not multiples of 8 and so LCM with p24 is bigger. Is there some non-p8-requiring trick upthread I've forgotten?
