Re: Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries

In my quest for better p27 battleship guns/shield generators/etc. I accidentally made this rather pretty p54 ship. (or flotilla? Idk) It pushes a pair of internal blocks forward in an appealing manner. These blocks stabilize a rather violent internal reaction, and when removed, the reaction shoots ...

I know. I called it a breeder because 1) It is neither a rake nor a puffer (like the gilder-laying switch engine) and 2) I thought a breeder meant any object that spawns other objects.

Re: What I'd like to see in Golly

Make ruletables support randomness!
Here's how it might work:
If the ruletable has conflicting rules, and if the ruletable has some sort of "random" property, it will randomly choose one of the conflicting rules and run it.

This will be extremely useful for lattice-gas simulations.

LWSS are very rare natural patterns.
On average, 1 LWSS is created by a soup for every 650 gliders it creates.
And soups/methuselae only create gliders in single/double digits!

I think a methuselah is any pattern that lasts more than 1000 gens before becoming periodic, and has a population that does not keep increasing forever. Therefore a pattern that creates a switch engine does not count.
