Re: Miscellaneous Discoveries in Other Cellular Automata

A combination of two rotating engines in the p15960 rule gives a big oscillator of period p191520 (!) that forms naturally from a very small predecessor:

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 5, rule = B2kn3-kq4cit5ce6cn/S23ijkqr4ceikr5ek

Re: Miscellaneous Discoveries in Other Cellular Automata

Those are both fascinating oscillators. The first one looks almost like an RRO of an RRO - an RRO-like structure that doesn't quite return to its original position but instead "rotates" slightly as a whole, it's hard to describe. Visually, it's movement reminds me of that of cyclones. The second one...

What is the smallest infinite growth pattern in this rule?
Probably around this size:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B3457/S4568
3obobo$o3bobo$o2b3o$5obo$2o$ob2ob2o$ob3obo!
Just from a manual search in Golly, I haven't seen any 6x6 patterns exploding.

Also self-promoting, but I nominate what I think has been the most interesting OCA thing I've worked on this year, the pair-interaction ships of Omosso (see the linked forum post to the current end of the thread), a very large class of unique ships with very high periods. x = 8, y = 4, rule = B2ek3ainq/S02-in

c/2 on the left, 2c/7 on the right
To define the boundaries of the rulespace, these two ships have minrule B2ek3in/S02-in and maxrule B2ek3-ejy4-cit5-iy6-i78/S02-i3-q4-i5678.

Re: Soup search results

The "time to boredom" is the time when e.g. for the D8_4 puffer methuselae when the glider streams form something like a boat-bit that stops them from interacting with the rest of the ash; dvgrn has measured this for numerous of the D8_4 methuselae soups. For Gotts' puffer methuselae it'd be more di...

There is also a limit on how many hauls the script that commits hauls (it has a short name, but I forget what) can process in each pass it does every five to ten minutes, which may be what causing the X3VI hauls to not get committed because there are so many of them uploaded soon after each other.

Re: MaritimeLife (B2i34c6cen7c8/S2-i3-q4c5a6e8)

Well, to break it down, "reflectorless" demonstrates the idea of the oscillator being referred to as being of a certain geometry so that it would seem that it should involve an internal object being reflected or hassled, but does not. Thus, the term "RRO of loopability 1" is still valid, but only a...

Re: MaritimeLife (B2i34c6cen7c8/S2-i3-q4c5a6e8)

It's not "fake", it's just "loopability = 1". It still reflectorless, it is still rotating, and it is still an oscillator. The term RRO was originally created to refer specifically to loopable oscillators. To quote Discord user zM, "The whole point of an RRO is that you can have multiple phase-shif...

JP21's phrasing suggests they are not looking for rules with adjustable but rather rules with the most known distinct spaceship mechanisms. Hive (B3-ry4ckn/S2-in3-cjn4it5aiky6-a7e8) seems like it would be a good example of a rule in this direction.
