Re: RLE grammar

For the header line, I also allow "h=nnn" and "v=nnn" to specify absolute positioning. Useful when you need to coordinate multiple layers (for example, Glider constructions starting vs. ending bit patterns). I gave up trying to enforce the 70 character limit on output, and on input just ignore white...

Re: LifeCodex

Is it possible to make a link to open a browser and jump directly to the relevant Catagolue page for a given object? Yes, it is. Will add that to the list of improvements. On my iPad, the slightly orangey red of the Source-only cells and input gliders, is hard for me to distinguish from the dark re...

LifeCodex

LifeCodex , available in the Apple App Store, is an iPad app that functions as a UI wrapper for an SQLite database which contains tables of Life Objects and Glider Constructions. In the current version (1.0.0), it has all stable object up to 18 Bits, and all known oscillators and spaceships up to 3...

Re: A Broader Audience for Cellular Automata

If someone wants a project, try adding a UI (specific to the OS) that would display Catagolue results that were just reported that are "interesting". Or embed apgsearch in a UI so a user can see something happening that looks Life-like. When I was doing the object censuses last century (I looked, an...

Re: A Formal Notation for Glider Syntheses

I came up with something like this and used it for the 16 in 16 glider synthesis project. I'd forgotten about your notation. And that I'd written a decoder for it and that I haven't broken that code with all the other changes I've been making to my Life utilities. (Haven't had the need to do the en...

Re: A Formal Notation for Glider Syntheses

General questions-- Is the goal an encoding that is machine readable, human readable, both or neither? Are you trying to encode existing, known constructions, or generate and survey them automatically? And if automatically, is it exhaustive enumeration, or randomly like Catalogue? Specific to this e...

Re: Thread For Your Useless Discoveries

A suggestion:

When posting "something interesting", please include a short description of what makes it interesting. I look at that RLE and see nothing interesting, because I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for.

Re: Systematic survey of small patterns

One minor comment: Since all velocities will be integer ratios, you might want to use that instead of angle in degrees, to avoid future problems specifying knightship velocities. Or, since all known small spaceships travel in only 8 directions, maybe a compass rose (N, NE, etc) or even radians with ...

Re: Thread for your unsure discoveries

I agree about the lack of population and speed info makes the standard Apgcode not as useful for quick visual searches. Which is why I just use the bitpattern info and ignore the apgcode prefix. If needed, and can substitute my own prefix. I would really like to see a searchable database of small pa...

Re: Enumerating Three-Glider Collisions

It looks like a simple explanation of the lane/timing is that a glider with (lane,timing)=(0,0) has 3 ON-cells in a single horizontal line and the cell (0,0) will be on in this generation and the next three and all lane numbers increase by 1 when shifting east. A couple or three examples would also...

Also, does this come up in the files somewhere? It would indicate the presence of a spark I have been looking for a synthesis of. Looks like there are 30 collisions that result in this constellation, probably all have the same ancestor, since they take about 180 generations to stabilize. Here are s...

is there some way to search for a pattern manually, and how do the coordinate systems for the entries work? I guess I should have documented the census data better. Re: Script request thread

I took the 3-Glider collisions data and created a database from it. Each record contains fields for the header, the rle (including the bounds), a modified apgcode (no prefix) the locations, directions and phases of each glider, the number of generations until stability (up to 200), an object count, ...

Re: Soup search results

All three are known rotors. The 39 bit version of the P5 was found by Hickerson. The other P5 casings are new. At some point maybe I need to finish up my objects SQLite database so that I can distribute it. One of the record keys it includes is Hickerson's rotor descriptor, so it's easy to look up o...

Re: Enumerating Three-Glider Collisions

What's the meaning of the header on each line? Windows at least isn't too happy with this storage method -- it decompresses to only 44.8MB of actual files, but the size on disk is 1.77GB (!). You probably have a huge block size on that disk. Even though a file is only a few bytes long, the space all...

The middle P6 appears in my lists. The other two are new.
The P8 does also, attributed to Hickerson.

Okay. Setting up the keyboard equivalent worked. I haven't yet upgraded to Golly 3.x, so I can't try that yet. One thing I have done in the past is to manually switch the rule from LifeHistory to Life, but the results were rarely usable (i.e. the shadow cells turned into living cells). What I usuall...

Re: Soup search results

Time to ask-- How does one convert "LifeHistory" into simple RLE format? At a minimum, the Gliders layer.

With Safari, the LifeViewer Ctrl-C gives me "Show in Viewer" when I paste.

If there's a way in Golly to extract it, it's hidden well.

Yes. That's the smallest oscillator with that sort of fuse for a rotor segment.
