Re: Thread for basic questions

You are going to need to define what you mean by "distinct p2 rotor types".

I've cataloged 7811 distinct P2 rotors in sizes from 2 to 118 bits, although lots of them are a single object supporting disjoint rotors.

Re: Soup search results

The problem with the comparison to "monkeys on typewriters" is that in a language, the probability of the next character is dependent on the previous characters. Individual characters are not independent events. For example, in English, "bv" less common than "ng", "qxr" is much less common than "the...

Just remember the words of Tom Lehrer--

When correctly viewed,
everything is lewd."

I like to create a random big pattern and let it run, its very relaxing. Back in the 1990s, over a period of years, I would let randomly generated 1024x1024 patterns run on idle machines at home and the office. I agree that seeing that activity can be entertaining, almost hypnotic. I enjoyed coming...

You can also use XCode to build C/C++ based tools on the Mac. In the past, I've created a "command line tool" project as a wrapper for the rest of the source code. You can then run the tool inside the IDE, or build a binary that can be run in Terminal.

Probably not all that useful with out the other pages before and after, and it does have some binder holes in it. The annotations were on the original copy I received.

This latest image is too busy.

The second image of the earlier posting is better. The split petals give the impression of "magnetic lines of force", which the first petals image doesn't have, even though I understand what the petals are showing.

The point is, new p2s are generally considered boring and these mechanisms are known. Actually, I looked through that, and I think there are some interesting things going on in there. A few transition and corner mechanisms I need to add to my list of Period-2 Oscillator parts. Thanks. (It will be a...

Here's the key part (@ 1150) for the Confused Eaters: x=10, y=13 o$3o$3bo$2b2o3$6bo2$3bo3b2o$4b2o2b2o$5b2obo2$4bo! Turning this into a construction would be a useful exercise for those wanting to try and see how it's done. The constructions I have take at least 25 Gliders, and do not attach to an ex...

you could make it a competitive game, too. Each player given a random set of tiles to start. Each turn player can draw another tile, or build an object. Scoring based on the tiles used, and/or the size of the object. Play for set number of rounds, or to a set score, run out of tiles, etc. Also allow...

They are "new oscillators", no matter what the period might be, but there appears to be little to no public interest in cataloging and trying to understand them.

Interesting. Here's a not well thought out game idea-- Use two or three colors for the black blobs. If I calculate correctly, there would be 90 tiles with two colors, 300 with three, and 1400 with four. Then the object of a two person (or more?) game would be to build a complete four tile pattern, d...

The oscillator is known, found by Merzenich years ago. My records for large oscillators aren't organized enough to say if a construction is known. A quick search didn't find one.

LifeViewer cutting and pasting issue

I'm trying to track down a problem I'm having between LifeViewer and an app I'm working on. On a webpage, I try to copy a pattern that's being displayed by using "ctrl-c". I then get that string and attempt to paste it into by app. There's nothing but an empty string. This is an iOS app, so I've loo...

Apgsearch must be missing that the spaceship is destroyed by debris, which may be to do with the fact the debris appears behind the ship and not in front of it, so the algorithm may be automatically assuming the spaceship gets away because there's nothing in front of it. When I was doing collision ...

learn how to just run these patterns on paper or in your head (which I believe some of the "gods of old" are able to do) Back before computers, I did use up lots of graph paper (and erasers were cheaper than new paper). Still have some of that around here somewhere. At some point it did become unne...

Correct. RIght now I have to open up Golly, paste it, reselect it, find and run the conversion script, and then I finally have something that can be read by older programs.

You need to add a way to copy the starting pattern as just a simple RLE, removing the LifeHistory, or LifeUltra extensions.

(skipping over the recent posting)

I like the split dots better. With the petals, it isn't entirely obvious which quadrants are contributing. The split dots show that orthogonally, it takes two tiles to contribute, but only one diagonally.

A bit late, but here's a database dump of 7808 unique P2 rotors. (if I did the SQL query correctly...) Some are huge and redundant. One line per object, tab delimited with Hickerman's rotor descriptor, wcode and rle.
