Re: Simple growing spaceship

The front of it simulates a moving p6 analogue of the pentadecathlon: Hmmm! So it does! I'm going to try & bounce gliders off it. I like the idea of a slow moving reflector. I might be able to build a mobile memory loop... In the meantime, here a variation of Axaj's ship. A pair of them, eating a p...

Re: Naming Conventions?

The nomenclature of Life objects is rather interesting I'm sure that the colourful nomenclature has been a factor in promoting interest in Life. IMHO, if the original Life article by Martin Gardner in Scientific American had referred to Life objects by RLE or binary codes instead of descriptive nam...

Re: Golly scripts

PM 2Ring is using a very old version of Golly so some of his scripts don't work with newer versions (2.0 or later). Here is a fixed version: Thanks very much for fixing that, Andrew. I really would like to run the latest version, and take advantage of undo/redo (and the new scripting features) but ...

Re: Thread For Your Accidental Discoveries

What's significant about the spontaneously appearing reaction with the gliders and the LWSSs? Nothing much. I was just showing how I accidentally discovered this reaction. I'm very interested in any reaction that produces closely aligned pairs of gliders. It might be possible to tame the glider / L...

A herschel loop / replicator using the herschel duplicator that Calcyman posted recently. The 8 output herschels are in various orientations. They are currently "caught" by beehives, which send the "natural" B-heptomino glider back into the pattern, so when replacing these beehives with herschel con...

Here's a memory loop I built yesterday. It uses the p36 gun from Jason Summers' collection, but this construction should be possible for any gun with a period >= 34. Andrew,

Is there a Golly Python command to select the whole current pattern, like the Edit/Select All menu? Currently, I use
golly.select([-maxint//2, -maxint//2, maxint, maxint]); golly.shrink()
Is there a better way?

Re: LWSS gun

I've just written a Golly Python script that can build a LWSS or MWSS gun from any glider gun in the Jason Summers collection (assuming the gun period is high enough). It works ok, but it still needs a bit of fine tuning. I will post it in the Scripts forum, if anyone is interested.

Re: Herschel Duplicator

I don't know exactly what you mean by elemental, but a herschel duplicator is fairly easy to build. Start with any herschel conduit that emits a glider & feed that glider into a glider to herschel converter. But I assume you want something that is a bit more compact... :)

p30 glider stream splitter This pattern takes a p30 glider stream and splits it into two streams. Which output stream a glider ends up in is purely dependant on its order in the input stream, not on its position or phase. The stream is first duplicated by a p30 shuttle & inverter pair. Re: Hexagonal Life

Another way to get a hexagonal variant of Life is to transform the usual square grid into a hexagonal one. This can be done in a variety of ways. For example, we can combine square cells into pairs, in a brickwork pattern. The brick grid has the same topology as a hexagonal grid, with each brick bei...
