Hello everyone, I've been trying by getting into Life by messing around with some period two oscillators. Does anyone with more experience know if the following are known? It's nothing too impressive, but I'm just trying to warm up. :D I couldn't find oscillators similar to this one. rle The follow...

### Re: Absolutely Useless Patterns Not Worthy Of Patterns Thread

A (semi-)natural clock producing pattern I remember finding probably 7 years ago:

Code: Select all

``````x = 8, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
A couple results at c/5d, a ship made of 99% known components and a half-stabilization for a possibly new wave
Very cool! How were they found?
By adapting partials from an ongoing LSSS floating-row search, (1,1)c/5 margin=28 max_width=11 seedcolumn=12.
Laminar: a descriptor for a wickstretcher (or growing ship or wick ship) stretching a wick with both spatial and temporal period 1 (i.e. one or more line wicks of arbitrary thickness).
Example of a laminar wickstretcher:
Code: Select all
``````x = 4, y = 4, rule = B2ce3aj/S1e2-cn3a4aqr5i

Not that bizarre, really — this rule is essentially just a cross between Life and HighLife where a cell is only born on B6 if it hasn't had anything but 5 or 8 live neighbors since it last died, if I gather right.

Probably an agar search of some sort — which is how a lot of oscillators and wicks, in addition to agars, have historically been found.
