These are programs written in the C language. You convert them into a runnable program by running a "C compiler". I don't know Mac OS, but Google should help you install a free compiler such as gcc.

Pasting patterns with other rules in Golly

I'm running Golly 2.2 in Linux. I've found that pasting patterns doesn't change the rule. I think in some earlier versions it did. Is this intended behavior, a setting I need to find and change, or a bug?

Like I say, my C knowledge isn't what it should be. I haven't found the bug in the source code yet, but it's definitely a bug. The modified version has a bug in the "-filt" option, confusing one parameter for another. My knowledge of C is pretty rudimentary, but I'm trying to find the problem.

Yeah, that was just by trial and error. I happened to find this same puffer a few weeks ago, then just played around with adding stuff behind it until I found this.

Just to keep things simple, let's say a "phoenix" is an oscillator in which no cells ever survive. In which rules can they exist, and which periods can they have? Since removing survival rules can never affect a phoenix, finding phoenices is equivalent to finding oscillators in rules without surviva...
