Re: Catagolue Discussion Thread

How would you efficiently determine whether the ash of a soup contains a large/rare still-life? How is it currently done? I'd legitimately like to know. I've been rewriting a bunch of my Life tools, and one of the features I've lost is the ability to detect escaping Gliders. (The old way was arbitr...

Re: Golly suggestions

We need to create a text file that includes all the oscillators we want as separate RLEs. It's called a database, and it's not hard to create one. I use SQLite which is a part of the MacOS. I've set up and use database that is single common file which has several tables. The primary table is for ob...

I'd certainly like to try and reuse the bit of apgsearch that separates patterns into their components. I'd also be interesting in knowing how apgsearch finds escaping spaceships. Where is all that in the source code? Is there any high level description of the processes involved? I'm in the process...

Bitfields-- if I remember correctly, they were never defined properly (at least as of 2005 or so), so they were compiler implementation dependent. The standard didn't define where the empty space would be if the bitfields didn't conform to byte or word boundaries. (You have a 3 bit field, and a two ...

"Nobody really keeps track of period-3 oscillators." Not true. It's just that the loudest voices don't care about them, so people get shouted at when they are posted. Although I do agree that posting isolated lower period oscillators is bad form and a bit annoying, and it would be better to collect ...

Back in the late 1990s, I remember the Seattle airport had a Life display wall at one of the concourses as part of the various artworks. Display consisted of individual bulbs, maybe a 24x24 array. It would display patterns and run them for a while, about 1 gen per second. Not sure how they were gene...

Re: Glider Destruction Of Still Lives, Oscillators, Etc.

What would actually be interesting are objects/patterns where it can be proved that they can't be eliminated by two or fewer Gliders. (Why two? I would suspect that most simple objects that can't be eliminated by one can be converted into an object, pattern or constellation that can. A non-simple ob...

There are only 42 possible collisions of a Glider and a 14-bit Barberpole. Done systemtically, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to find this:

Comments on the Mac version-- I don't have a mouse wheel, I have a trackpad. "Subcomponent" doesn't quite capture the idea that there is a dependency. Unless you add a qualifier, then it could either be "dependent" or "independent" ("standalone"?). In this case, that it requires a specific other component to work properly.

You are going to need to define what you mean by "distinct p2 rotor types".

I've cataloged 7811 distinct P2 rotors in sizes from 2 to 118 bits, although lots of them are a single object supporting disjoint rotors.

The problem with the comparison to "monkeys on typewriters" is that in a language, the probability of the next character is dependent on the previous characters. Individual characters are not independent events. For example, in English, "bv" less common than "ng", "qxr" is much less common than "the...
