Re: Soup search results

I'd certainly like to try and reuse the bit of apgsearch that separates patterns into their components. I'd also be interesting in knowing how apgsearch finds escaping spaceships. Where is all that in the source code? Is there any high level description of the processes involved? I'm in the process...

Re: Thread For Your Useless Discoveries

Bitfields-- if I remember correctly, they were never defined properly (at least as of 2005 or so), so they were compiler implementation dependent. The standard didn't define where the empty space would be if the bitfields didn't conform to byte or word boundaries. (You have a 3 bit field, and a two ...

Re: Oscillator Discussion Thread

"Nobody really keeps track of period-3 oscillators." Not true. It's just that the loudest voices don't care about them, so people get shouted at when they are posted. Although I do agree that posting isolated lower period oscillators is bad form and a bit annoying, and it would be better to collect ...

Re: Physical implementation of Conways computer

Back in the late 1990s, I remember the Seattle airport had a Life display wall at one of the concourses as part of the various artworks. Display consisted of individual bulbs, maybe a 24x24 array. It would display patterns and run them for a while, about 1 gen per second. Not sure how they were gene...

Re: Glider Destruction Of Still Lives, Oscillators, Etc.

What would actually be interesting are objects/patterns where it can be proved that they can't be eliminated by two or fewer Gliders. (Why two? I would suspect that most simple objects that can't be eliminated by one can be converted into an object, pattern or constellation that can. A non-simple ob...

Re: Glider Destruction Of Still Lives, Oscillators, Etc.

There are only 42 possible collisions of a Glider and a 14-bit Barberpole. Done systemtically, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to find this:

It should be trivial to search for every possible collision with an object and find the elimination reactions. One of my first Life related projects was cataloging all reactions, by hand, using punch cards, 45 years ago. (Was it really that long ago? Takes of shoes and socks ... Nope, 46 years. 1974...

The "Shrink Selection" item of the "Edit" menu. Unfortunately, the "Shrink and Fit" changes the scale, which can make the bits surprisingly large. I'll play around with the key-bindings. As for the pasteboard issue, I've got a hack that works, for now. Just need to know if things change so I can unh...

Comments on the Mac version-- I don't have a mouse wheel, I have a trackpad. I prefer the "two fingers scrolling" gesture that's part of the MacOS, but Golly replaces it with Evil Inc.'s "two fingers zoom" gesture. I can turn that off by disabling "mouse wheel action" in the preferences, but then no...

Re: Synthesis components

"Subcomponent" doesn't quite capture the idea that there is a dependency. Unless you add a qualifier, then it could either be "dependent" or "independent" ("standalone"?). In this case, that it requires a specific other component to work properly.

Re: Thread for basic questions

You are going to need to define what you mean by "distinct p2 rotor types".

I've cataloged 7811 distinct P2 rotors in sizes from 2 to 118 bits, although lots of them are a single object supporting disjoint rotors.

The problem with the comparison to "monkeys on typewriters" is that in a language, the probability of the next character is dependent on the previous characters. Individual characters are not independent events. For example, in English, "bv" less common than "ng", "qxr" is much less common than "the...

I like to create a random big pattern and let it run, its very relaxing. Back in the 1990s, over a period of years, I would let randomly generated 1024x1024 patterns run on idle machines at home and the office. I agree that seeing that activity can be entertaining, almost hypnotic. I enjoyed coming...

You can also use XCode to build C/C++ based tools on the Mac. In the past, I've created a "command line tool" project as a wrapper for the rest of the source code. You can then run the tool inside the IDE, or build a binary that can be run in Terminal.
