Re: Jokes

Golly seems to crash in these two situations:

1. When the population changes from 154 to 155.

2. When the population is 157 in two consecutive generations, usually; there's a small chance of it surviving and a small chance of a visually glitched screen but no behavior changes.

How do I fix this?

These guns aren't record-breaking, but it's possible the same mechanism (which is the same for both of these) can be used elsewhere. p224 (p56 phi sparker, p32 V sparker) x = 44, y = 46, rule = B3/S23 13b2o7bo$13bobo5b2o15b2o$14b2o3b2obo15bo$10b2o7b2o15bobo$9bobo15b2o7b 2o$9bo15bob2o3b2o$8b2o15b2o5b...

Re: Execution of Old Guns by Variable-Speed Firing Squad

If you look in the textcensus, I just added several 4-digit gun periods that are multiples of 192 (7, 9, 13, 17, 19, 29, 31, 37, 43, and I might be missing one or two). Their bounding boxes are typically between 2000 and 4000 cells.

Re: Script request thread

Go through the Catagolue gun census. For 4-digit periods that are a 3-smooth number times a number under 1000, automatically add semi/tremi/quadri-snarks to the 3-digit periods to create the 4-digit period if it would result in a reduction. If there is currently no gun for the specified 4-digit numb...

The number of 1xn patterns with no dots or dominoes (i.e. that don't die immediately) has the ratio of f(n):f(n-1) approach phi. The law of large numbers can be seen in "is A more common than B given a specific sample size" as the sample size tends toward infinity. There are quadratic growth pattern...

This forum has some discussion of SAT solvers used to find oscillators and spaceships (or prove them impossible). Has anyone used SAT solvers for their intended purpose of solving the SATs? Many people on this forum are in the United States and in high school.

Using either Golly or LifeViewer (LifeViewer is the in-browser simulator on this website), select all (or a region) and click copy (or control-C). On the forum post, click the "pattern" or </> tag (they're identical), and then paste it in. It should look like this: x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3/S23 o$2obo...

Many of you aren't submitting your improvements to Catagolue. I updated the spreadsheet that I got from textcensus, checked page 38 and 39, and had to submit about 8 of them.

Re: Human-readable alternative to base64-encoded MAP rulestrings?

Unfortunately, there isn't really a compressed way to do it, since base64 is already almost as compressed as you can get, and it's 86 characters. Staying with ASCII, using the 95 printable characters only brings this down from 86 to 78 characters, and all possibilities are used so it can't be compre...
