Re: Golly 4.3b2
Patterns/Other-Rules/Langtons-Ant.rle should be moved into Patterns/Turmites. Sorry, not going to happen. At this point I'm only interested in fixing serious problems. One of the reasons making Golly hard to use is that you can't nudge the selection using arrow keys. Plus, Golly don't have an optio...

Re: Golly 4.3b2
Please remove these rules from the default named list before you release, they don't deserve a place that high! Sorry, but I like them and they're staying. You can use the Delete button in the Control > Set Rule dialog to remove named rules. Or quit Golly and edit GollyPrefs (that's quicker if you ...

Re: Golly 4.3b2
Here's a checkin that addresses most of these issues. I've updated the pattern links in changes.html to reflect these changes. Note that all the pattern renaming/moving has resulted in a lot of broken links in the older sections in changes.html. I was tempted to fix these links but decided it's pro...

Golly 4.3b2
Golly 4.3b2 is now available for testing: EDIT: Links removed now that 4.3 is available from sourceforge. Here are the main changes to 4.3b1: Adjusted Super conversion scripts to handle Investigator rules, including a new toInvestigator.lua conversion script that will be mapped by default to Alt+I (...

Re: Golly suggestions
GUYS! GOLLY WAS REMOVED FROM GOOGLE PLAY STORE, SO YOU NEED TO ACT FAST!!! Please don't shout. If and when I decide to update the Android version of Golly, this forum will be the first to know. In the meantime, you (or anybody else) might like to have a go at building it yourself. Download Golly's ...

Re: Golly bugs
When there is no Cancel button, <Esc> or closing the dialog would return the empty string instead of "gtk-cancel". But that's not consistent with what happens on the other platforms. If a script writer creates a 2-button dialog then we want g.query to return the label on one of those buttons (usual...

Re: Golly bugs
Hmm, that's rather ugly. I'm going to try binding a key event handler to the dialog so we can detect the escape key and ignore it when there's no Cancel button. Late here so will try that tomorrow.

Re: Golly bugs
If I create a two button dialog without a Cancel button and press Escape then on Windows the keypress is ignored but on Linux the dialog closes and the string gtk-cancel is returned. Yep, I see the same thing on my Linux system -- how annoying! I don't see any way around that problem. Might have to...

Re: Golly bugs
I might be able to summon up the enthusiasm to squeeze this into 4.3b2. I've added a tentative Lua version of this idea. I decided to call the function "query" rather than "confirm". Also dropped the idea of an extra parameter to set the default button, mainly because you can't make the Cancel butt...

Re: Golly bugs
Currently Lua scripts can use the scripting command "g.savechanges(query, message)" ... AFAIK this is not available for Python scripts. (Is this intended?) More or less. It was needed in a couple of Lua scripts (along with g.settitle) that use the overlay (also not available in Python). I don't hav...

Re: Golly bugs
Yep, that would be better. If the clipboard doesn't contain a script then we can't assume it contains a pattern. Might be some random text.

Re: Golly bugs
I think previewing the clipboard and better error reporting would help. Surely the people who want to preview the clipboard can just open it in their text editor (Mac users can also use the Finder to Edit > Show Clipboard). Requiring confirmation would be incredibly annoying for people like me who ...

Re: Golly bugs
Ubuntu does seem to be the most fragile variant of Linux when it comes to wxWidgets based apps. See Help > Known Problems for example.

Re: Golly bugs
Ubuntu 22.04, GNOME 42.9. When a Golly script opens a help window (for example "safeopenclip.lua" opens "Rule Help" window), the help window often ends up hidden behind the main Golly window. I can't reproduce this problem on my Linux system (Mint 20 running as a VM on my Mac). Are you building Gol...

Re: Golly 4.3b1
Life/Miscellaneous/pure-nonfiller.rle is a duplicate of Super/pure-nonfiller-LifeHistory.rle. Life/Syntheses/oscillator-syntheses.rle contains an invalid glider synthesis for the oscillator A for all. Life/Signal-Circuitry/signal-turns-and-fizzles.rle.gz does not have comments, and is outdated in l...

Re: Golly bugs
I think the cause is that there are two lines exceeding 1000 characters (declarations of variables "x0" and "a1"). There's a 1000-byte line_buffer in ruletable_algo.cpp. Thanks for the report -- I've increased that buffer to 4000 bytes. EDIT: I've also improved the code so an error message will be ...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
I was thinking more about the following use case (when the rule in the pattern comments is different than Golly's stored rule): 4) ignore Golly's stored rule and use the rule from the pattern comments and open the pattern. To handle this case the script could do steps like this: * Call saverules = ...
