Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
Yep, I think that should work. (Is that how links to patterns/*.rle files are also handled?) This is now set up (e.g., https://conwaylife.com/rules/DoubleB3S23.rule points to the rule that's on the wiki). This is done via a server-side URL rewrite, so it is instantaneous (i.e., it's not a script th...

Re: safeopenclip.lua usability issues
You could also use Golly's "get:url" feature to download a .rule file and switch to that rule. This requires the url to end in ".rule" so it might be necessary to ask Nathaniel to write a little script to periodically store all the current rule info in .rule files somewhere on conwaylife.com. Hopef...

Re: Life viewer is not allowed
Add a new "LV" tag that does the exact same as the "viewer" tag. Have the "LV" button displayed, but the "viewer" button hidden. Then the "viewer" tag would still exist for backwards compatibility reasons, but the "LV" tag would be the visible one, which is less enticing to newcomers. Add a new "pa...

Re: Life viewer is not allowed
Is it still possible, though? Basically anything is possible. PHP is Turing-complete, after all. It's just a matter of (a) how much effort it would take on my part to make it work (I don't know whether things like "account creation date" are already pulled into the posting page's scope, for example...

Not possible without quite a bit of under-the-hood mucking, unfortunately.hotcrystal0 wrote: ↑February 11th, 2024, 3:17 pmHow about making the viewer/LV tag invisible to people with accounts under three months old?

Re: Life viewer is not allowed
I can muck around with the phpBB internals if needed, but I prefer not to do that without really good reason, since it can cause issues when we update to a new software version. The "off the shelf" phpBB code customization options are very limited -- I can only add new phpBB codes, and optionally di...

Re: Regarding the name of the """logarithmic""" replicator rule
An executive decision (as per Step 5 of LW:DR ) has been requested, so here I am to make it. Executive decision: This page will be moved to OCA:sqrt replicator rule . Its introductory paragraph should mention the common-usage name "logarithmic replicator rule" as well though, and the redirect from ...

Re: Mikipedia clutter
I understand, but the userpage is one's castle. One can do anything they like as long as it does not spread out to the main page space. I realize that we currently don't have any rules contrary to this, but that's just because we seem to have a habit here of not writing down rules until we need the...

Let me try it: https://conwaylife.com/?rle=b!&name=Small-color-changing-90-degree-glider-reflector ... Darn. It didn't fill in properly based on my description. Re: Proposed home page refresh
One minor update to the homepage today: you can now load in custom RLEs via the "rle" URL parameter, and you can optionally load a custom name via a "name" URL parameter. For example, go to https://conwaylife.com/?rle=3o&name=Blinker and see what pattern loads.

Re: LifeWiki Edit War Reporting Thread
I disagree with dvgrn's 'solution'. I think keeping these pages is a disservice to the community. Disagreeing of course is fine, but as stated at LifeWiki:Deletion policy , the decision to delete a page or not is made at the discretion of Moderators. Undoing a Moderator's decision on the wiki is no...

Re: RFC: The default public place to discuss LifeWiki-related issues
Minor point: the group name "Editors" is somewhat strange, because everyone who edits LifeWiki pages can consider themselves an editor, regardless of any additional abilities (i.e. deleting pages, etc.) I agree with this -- I actually don't particularly like the name "Editor", since (for example) i...

Re: RFC: The default public place to discuss LifeWiki-related issues
In my mind, the ideal situation would be that discussion of LifeWiki issues happens on LifeWiki, since that keeps everything in one place. Talk pages keep discussion close to the relevant page, for example. However , in practice I find LifeWiki much worse for having long discussions, much worse for ...

Nathaniel, can I run this? It gets all Life RLEs from the oscillator discussion thread. I've already tested it on pages 1 and 2. Re: LifeWiki infoboxes
When gallery items have different heights, is it possible to align them to the top by default (like in the galleryContainer/galleryItem case), rather than to the bottom? I have now made this change, so that the new "galIt" class aligns boxes to the top by default (you can now see this behaviour at ...

Re: LifeWiki infoboxes
I have done two things that will hopefully help. Please let me know if these are actually helpful, and how they can be improved: 1. I have added a "hideimg" parameter to all infobox templates, which can be used to hide the image/LV that appears at the top of the pattern's infobox. Specify "hideimg=1...

The same password for multiple accounts ... seems like a rather silly and pointless thing to do, but it's not something that moderators would have a lot of insight into necessarily. Re: Thread for your website-related questions
Also, speaking for myself, I had forgotten that the book website doesn't automatically use the latest LifeViewer version from the forums and LifeWiki. Yeah, my thinking with using a static version of LV on the book website was that, just like the book, the book's website should be static/unchanging...

And how large is that in scientific notation? It's hard to get a good idea of how large something is when its expressed in recursive equations like that. The reason for using recursive equations or tetration notation is that you cannot effectively write the lifespan using scientific notation. It's ...

A fix is in the works (Macbi mentioned it earlier too). Can you let me know what browser/type of phone you're using? It works fine on all phones I have access to (all iPhones), which makes it somewhat annoying for me to test.
