Re: (27,1)c/72 caterpillar challenge
Hello, I exist again. I was messaged about this thread, and it took about a week before I could read it fully enough to contribute meaningfully. But, now I can help answer questions. And I'll start with another typical wall of text, hopefully outlining the project from a much more distant perspectiv...

Re: Crawlers
The problem there is that the two tracks would eventually converge. Well yeah, but isn't that how 31/240 etc work? you set up something to delete the last B-heptomino and connect a synthesis at a translation. Your understanding of the prior work seems wrong, the crawlers are not deleted in any of t...

I'm giving golly 10GB of my RAM and still getting 99% garbage collections when trying to run at 2^18.
Edit: Pushed it to 13 GB and still got 99% GCs so probably my 16GB laptop can't run away either.

And then someone doing so could also be free to define non-diagonal oblique selections, perhaps with slope 45/19 along the sides. I might need to invest some time with Lua.

This classy bamboozle: The switch that turns on the extra A...F printer characters hasn't gotten much independent review, though. The only documentation for the hexadecimal option is some text in the pattern itself, a little left of center. Looking at it again, it's a very small patch compared to th...

Is there a way using the banana spark configuration to also make some methuselah? Have it explode a bit, but when stable remain clear of the three control cells? Then use that debris as an elbow of sorts, with at least sufficient clearance to build a snark? I expect with active control over three ce...

Re: (27,1)c/72 caterpillar challenge
Life update: I have completed classes. I might be able to put some spark back in this project. It just seemed a bit too thinkythonky to do in parallel with the whole not-failing-grad-level-physics-courses thing. A couple remarks (mainly here to get present-me on the same page as past-me): There is a...

Can someone clue me in as to the authenticity of the fine structure constant calculator? I have seen it posted a few times but wasn't certain if it was actually computing it (from loop diagrams..?) or performing some hard coded sequence. I don't want to have to trace the calls and values stored in t...

Am I the only one who finds it extremely difficult to understand how the excavated dodecahedron is self-dual? I'm with you there. The polyhedron itself has 12 vertices of maximal radius but it's dual looks to have 60. So the equivalence has to be topological rather than geometric, making it harder ...

Welcome! This forum points to a lot of good resources, see the "Game of Life Links" thread. Quite a few more good resources are in the other threads but it's a lot to wade through and the search function is a bit lacking. I think there's a post by dvgrn somewhere listing many different directions so...

Most things by Animals as Leaders, Between the Buried and Me, and Haken are in odd time signatures. Those are kind of my fav three bands at the moment. Not sure if anyone else here likes that kind of music - I noticed linking AAL earlier in this thread met with zero response. I'll dump a bunch anywa...

Re: Hello ! French Student here for AI homework !
I think dvgrn's post gave a very accurate summary of why GA and CGOL are not very likely to work well together. when he is the one explaining, it seems so simple that I'm almost schocked nobody ever thought of this subject. The topic has come up before, with people trying to find spaceships: see her...

Re: Gems?
Tables and houses seem to be against the original definition, wherein the basic parts must also be still lives. One way to view this is to create a huge tree of terminology to describe each combination, assigning consistent labels in accordance with some definite rules. However, this is a potentiall...

Just trying to make sure I follow: Here are 4 patterns, each with a piece above it. If I understand you right, the left two are gems because a single still life can be connected to itself 4 times making a bigger still life. In the 3rd, the base still lives aren't connected by live cells, just overcr...

Alternate select options would be a great addition. Whenever working with large patterns with skewed-repeating sections like the waterbear or currently-backburnered (27,1)c/72 ship, it's been a real pain to only be able to select rectangular regions.

Re: Purpose of spaceships and how to build them?
The engineered spaceships are made from building blocks that match together with phase offsets to produce some controlled over-unity reaction. The rest of the work is harnessing the over-unity output to keep the front end moving along. I like simple questions with extremely involved answers, (much o...
