Re: Using tensorflow to run CGOL
That's a huge improvement! I also think so... the only advantage, this have over your example - except some small cluster hardware, that jax is working out of the box, and for lifelib you will need some distribution library, is that it's python, and lifelib currently for this functionality is still...

Re: Using tensorflow to run CGOL
As it's parallel computing - I couldn't use the (min, max) frame and ignore the zeros around. So very tiny patterns might still run faster on LifeAPI, but generally speaking if you have the hardware like cluster or even 4 GPUs, LifeAPI has no chance. Also one could define a smaller grid like 40x64 f...

Using tensorflow to run CGOL
I've finally managed to write CGOL iterator using tensorflow, which is the adaption of LifeAPI iterator. You can run it on whatever hardware that supports tf. Like GPU, multi GPU, TPU, cluster computing etc. they all have acceleration for tf and bitwise operations are part of its specification. Soon...

Re: Translating python golly script to lua with ChatGPT
I found my way in to ChatGPT today Great! It's not exactly right, but it sure does seem to know some potentially useful stuff about Life I tried to ask it for a full list of oscillators, and it wasn't able to. It brought some strange variations, confusing period with number of cells, glider synth, ...

Re: Make a Spaceship With an Adjustable Slope
I made a script which builds a Speed Orthogonoid (predecessor) for any given any sub-c/2 orthogonal speed. Congrats on the discovery! I remember when building the Caterloopillar which was limited by c/4, I was thinking about the day someone will solve the spaceship speeds for c/2-c/4 using universa...

Re: Small Quadratic Growth Patterns
A 20-cell quadratic growth from my latest experiments Very neat! I am very glad to see my old record breaking run from 26 by Nick Gotts to 23 quadratic finally broken. I remember thinking how cool is that to break a record that held for 8 years. Now I see this record broken in about the same time (...

Re: Conway's Life Exploratorium
Eventually we'll be able to open a museum! Here is my attempt on "Large patterns Cambrian explosion". The idea is when computers will be much more powerful than today, this could look as cool as the original Cambrian Explosion. The pattern includes: Pi calculator, Caterpilllar, Gemini, Remini, Orth...

Re: Translating python golly script to lua with ChatGPT
I'm on the notification list And how about gpt3 ? It's not a chat but a text completion engine, but it gives 95% similar results. ChatGPT is a little bit overhyped, openai gives you some credit for free to start playing around with gpt3. shows up another imperfection or two in ChatGPT's source data...

Re: Translating python golly script to lua with ChatGPT
Wow! I''ve been on the waiting list to talk to ChatGPT for a while now, but they haven't let me in yet -- too many interested people, I guess. I think it's open and free for anyone. What happens when you enter here ? You only need to login with google or wtr. You can also try openai's playground it...

Translating python golly script to lua with ChatGPT
I've installed a new golly on a new computer, and needed to convert LifeHistory state to Life. Golly has no LifeHistory2Life converter built-in at all, so I remembered my long ago written python script that creates a simple rule to convert LifeHistory to Life (and thus using golly computational powe...

Re: CGOL patterns as NFTs
If I wanted to hang a Mona Lisa on my wall, I'd be perfectly fine paying $5 for a google print rather then $5M for the original. You missed the point there. I was talking about sentiment we attach to the first creation and not million of copies that comes to them afterwards. This was in response to...

Re: CGOL patterns as NFTs
I see no point in paying extra for something because it was the first of something. Would you pay 5$ for the original Mona Lisa? Why? You can print it from google images for much cheaper. It just the first painting. Similarly, I see no point in paying any money for an NFT, no matter what sentiments...

Re: CGOL patterns as NFTs
I'm not entirely up to date with what NFTs actually are: what I know is that they're marketable formalities, something that can be created, owned, bought and sold but are nothing, in that they are not physical objects, nor software, nor numbers on paper or a computer equivalent to money, nor anythi...

@pcallahan - imagine an artist or creation that you like. A history channel for example or some sort of product review or any content creation you like. Now the content creator needs support in order to have time and freedom to continue his effort. So the creation is continuous and the support is co...

Re: CGOL patterns as NFTs
My semi-evolved primate brain just says it is not real. How it's less real than supporting someone on patreon or paying for kickstarter? The only idea you should grasp that past is more certain than the future so supporting someone continuously, supporting someone for his past, and supporting someo...

Re: CGOL patterns as NFTs
@calcyman - this looks great, I don't mind to wait for technical stuff you started. @dvgrn - I think you had the most objections so far, especially as the moderator. And yes I got deeply into this possibility - but I agree with most of the reasons you mentioned why it's bad for the community and for the field in general. My main point was - look how bad actors can ruin the hegemony...

In my mind, it has gone from "What a terrible idea, and who would even want that?" to "I wouldn't mind if it worked, but it obviously won't." Maybe a Patreon model would be more appropriate Just like Kickstarter, patreon requires some commitment. Re: CGOL patterns as NFTs
As far as I can tell NFT - is just a code, an id engraved permanently in the blockchain that can be traded. What you do with it, how you trade it - and what meaning it has to you, it's up to you to interpret. Just like more traditional money in the bank are also just numbers that can be transferred ...
