Re: Thread For Your Useless Discoveries

My CatForce runs use a symmetrical version of the drifter catalyst for ease of computation, but this result uses both sides:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 25, rule = B3/S23

Re: Results of catalyst tests

It's pretty bulky though, so I suspect instances where this thing can be applied will be pretty rare. Still good to note for future reference, for whenever having loads of these niche catalysts might be handy. It might be good to keep a version of CatForce with every crazy catalyst that's ever been...

Also, is that four-glider tub with tail synthesis known? I didn't notice it in Mark Niemiec's database . It's either unknown or poorly-documented--I've occasionally wished for a TWIT synthesis just like that, though I don't remember the exact reasons it would have been helpful in the past. As a pro...

That approach to honey farm hasslers looks productive. There are various other honey farm catalysts that could be similarly investigated, in addition to the single BTS. Re: Simplest 2 gliders in/1 glider out 180° stable reflector?

Maybe just to set a precise bound on the kind of solution that I'd be happy to see: it should consist of still lifes with a total cell count of 11 or less, and no single still life with more than 7 cells. A block and eater is the obvious target, but there may be other solutions within those constra...

The new p20 gun reminded me of Kazyan's p87 gun that uses the same block+pre-pi -> glider reaction. It seemed unlikely that a p3 would work, because the reaction takes place very close to a catalyzing block, but JLS was astoundingly able to find a solution: x = 51, y = 51, rule = B3/S23 43b2ob2o$38...

Re: Results of catalyst tests

I've found that the BTS is so versatile because it doesn't have a single iconic reaction--there are several evolutionary paths that a perturbed BTS can take to settle back into the original BTS configuration. Unfortunately, it's a catalyst better suited for automated programs than manual use.

How about a direct highway robber?

It's kind of odd that we don't have a small highway robber yet--a p1 pattern that acts as a glider eater on one lane, but lets gliders pass completely on an adjacent lane and all further-away lanes. To date, the smallest highway robbers are large devices that use specialized baits to catch gliders, ...
