Stains is a Life-like cellular automaton in which dead cells get born if they have precisely three, six, seven or eight live neighbors, and in which live cells will survive if they have precisely two, three, five, six, seven or eight live neighbors. Almost all random patterns in Stains grow up to a certain point and then turn into one or more irregular-shaped oscillators or still lifes.

A variety of spaceships are known to exist in Stains, including the glider as well as several larger ships:

Infinite growth

"Most close variations of these rules expand forever, but this one curiously does not. Why?" - It was an open question till 1999[1]. The first contradictory patterns were published then, all with 2c/5 velocities and linear growth. In 2016, speed 3c/7 linear growth patterns were discovered,[2] and 2c/6, c/4 in 2017.[3][4] Nonlinear infinite growth problem is still open in this rule, as well as an existence of any kind of sawtooth pattern.
