By flops (or butterfly[1]) is a period-2 oscillator found by Robert Wainwright.[2]
This oscillator resembles why not incredibly strongly; indeed, it can be transformed into why not simply by placing an extra cell at one of the two Y-shaped appendages at a given side. Performing this on both sides gives why bother.
Commonness
- Main article: List of common oscillators
It first appeared naturally in Catagolue on May 21, 2015, in a soup submitted by Brett Berger,[3] after previously having been seen in Andrzej Okrasinski's census.
This pattern has occurred naturally in Catagolue's asymmetric censuses, however details of its rarity are currently not known.
Glider synthesis
All strict still lifes with a population of 21 or fewer cells, all oscillators with 16 or fewer cells, and all spaceships with 31 or fewer cells are known to be glider-constructible. A glider synthesis of this object can be found in the infobox to the right.
