Soup (or broth[1]) is a random initial pattern, often assumed to cover the whole Life universe.

Frequency of stable objects

Achim Flammenkamp has compiled a list of the 100 most common stable (including periodic) objects, as well as resulting oscillators, from evolving 1,829,196 randomly seeded 2048 x 2048 tori at an initial density of 0.375.[2]

Sparse Life

Sparse Life is the study of the evolution of a soup of vanishingly small density. Such a universe is dominated at an early stage by blocks and blinkers in a ratio of about 2:1. Much later it will be dominated by simple infinite growth patterns. The long-term fate of a sparse Life universe is not certain.
