The oscillator first appeared semi-naturally on February 12, 2022, in a soup by Charity Engine.[5] Since then, about 1 in 7×1010 soups in the correct symmetry (C2_1) form a Merzenich's p64 in the centre.
The active region in Merzenich's p64 ranks 31st in the list of common evolutionary sequences, and the region is identified as belonging to Merzenich's p64 rather than having a distinct name.
