Based on this I think a limit of 500 on the maximum bounding box dimension is a reasonable default value.

I think this idea works well enough to be used for most searches. I've updated the searchRule-matchPatt2.py script on the Drive folder with a simplistic change that implements this idea. It can be disabled easily by setting the maxDim parameter to 0.

Great. If a 3-cell p31 photon is found then there will be 3-cell photons for all periods up to 32. I wonder if p33 will be feasible to find a 3-cell photon as well.

You can check this kind of thing yourself by using Saka's 5Ssort.py script, obtaining a copy of the 5S collection (get the 5S_Collection.zip file from the link in my signature and unzip to the same folder as the script) and running the following commands:
python 5Ssort.py Oblique\ ships.sss.txt slope-period up -d 1
python 5Ssort.py Oblique\ ships.sss.txt slope-period down-up -d 1

This will give you the lowest period ships with the highest and the lowest slope. Incidentally, I think the slope for oblique ships is inverted from what it should be. Instead slope should be calculated as:
def slope(x,y):
    if x*y==0:
        return 0
    else:
        return min(x,y)/max(x,y)

This means orthogonal ships will have slope 0, ships close to orthogonal will have slopes close to 0, ships close to diagonal will have slopes close to 1, and diagonal ships will have slope 1.

16c/19 orthogonal, 9 cells - I wasn't actually expecting to get a result from this LLS search but it completed in just over 11 hours.

Here is a search for a high-period c/3 diagonal ship. It finds approximately 1 ship per 5000 rules. The starting pattern is 9 generations of century in the rule with the 11c/33d, which becomes a puffer more comon than the 11c/33d itself.

I'm in the process of updating, I should be done soon.
I and wildmyron manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules.

Things to work on:
- Find a (7,1)c/8 ship in a Non-totalistic rule
- Finish a rule with ships with period >= f_e_0(n) (in progress)
