Congratulations!

For a name, I suggest "Sir Robin" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYFefppqEtE), since it's a knight running away as fast as possible!

Wow, now that's not something I expected to see anytime soon! Huge congrats to Calcyman and Tom, this is an astounding result.

I like the way you're thinking. :) I was fond of "seahorse", but "Sir Robin" is just too good to pass up!

And what's more, an elementary knightship IS (well, was) the Holy Grail of Life, isn't it? We may finally found the Meaning of Life. :)

Someone should update Types of spaceships to reflect this amazing discovery!

I wonder: Can some of the old partials be welded to this ship?

Well done calcyman!

So the space of possible speeds used to look like this:
possiblespeedsold.png
possiblespeedsold.png (746 Bytes) Viewed 24963 times
but now looks like this:
possiblespeedsnew.png
possiblespeedsnew.png (787 Bytes) Viewed 24963 times
That's good progress!

I wonder if this will attract lots of new users to the forum in the same way that Gemini or Copperhead did? Maybe we should post some links on HackerNews and r/cellular_automata to get the publicity ball rolling?

EDIT:Here and here.

Amazing! I hoped one would be soon, but wow.
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

Its minrule-maxrule is "B3/S23 - B3/S234ce". Nearly every transition is used!

Many Congrats!

It's the first example of maximal speed in any oblique direction, which until now was an open problem. We didn't have even single case of maximal theoretical speed oblique ship, for any speed.

Reactions with gliders lead to blinkers or blocks too. And a c2-0020-rake fits perfectly. Now you can build a crawler-parcour very easy.

I'd vote against "seahorse", if only because IRL seahorses are actually incredibly slow (in fact, I think they are the slowest sea creatures alive), and this ship is moving at maximal speed for this angle. (Although there is the possibility of naming it ironically....)

I do like Sir Robin, though, for the stated reasons, as well as the fact that any new elementary knightships could be named Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad, etc.

As a mildly obsessive Life Lexicon editor, I have two quibbles about this. First, a kicked-back glider goes in the opposite direction from the incoming glider, so I think these reactions are more 90-degree reflection than kickback.

Second, we're not really used to these fast knightships yet. A glider can't actually catch up to a (2,1)c/6 knightship, it can only keep up, as the knightship shifts gradually sideways relative to the glider.

So if you rewind the above pattern by 24 ticks, for example, you get the following. I think this implies that gliders can't normally reach either of the given positions -- you'd need some extra trickery, maybe building them at the last minute with *WSS collisions or something. Would even that actually work?

Code: Select all

x = 78, y = 69, rule = B3/S23

EDIT: As far as a name goes, I do like the "Sir Robin" reference of course, but would much rather drop the "Sir" and make the name simpler and more subtle (and easier to type): "Robin" or "robin", to be followed perhaps by future knightships named "Lancelot" or "lancelot" or what have you.

But really the discoverers get to choose, no matter how many people vote which way. Let's see, Tom should choose the first 62% of the name, and Adam should decide on the last 38%, right?

You can approach to the knightship from 2 sides, a fast one (in this case the vertical backside) or the slow one (here the horizontal) If a glider arrives from the fast side, there is a sparcle in its way.

There is to find a way to "enter" from the short side, i think.

Since Adam completed the knightship, he's the official discoverer, so I think he should pick the name.
Getting something that almost works doesn't really count, though I appreciate his generosity in sharing
credit.

This ship was discovered through the use of a SAT solver, which I think is interesting. I can't wait to
see what else will happen when we really start flexing the power of SAT solvers in Life searches.

It's always been public (just not particularly well-advertised):

I'll accept Sir Robin as the official name; it's consistent with the search program being written in Python. And does, as others have mentioned, mean that future elementary oblique ships can be named after other Knights of the Round Table.
