All good things to keep in mind, for a script that attempts an automatic partition of a continuous glider synthesis.

I think that the non-trivial interacting side-effects are more of a problem for the incremental-to-continuous converter script. There will probably be some relative timings of Stage N and Stage N+1 where the side-effects interact non-trivially, and then just one or a few relative timings where the two stages can be done simultaneously.

But that just means that a binary search won't work to find the tightest continuous recipe. Every relative timing in a wide range has to be tested, or there's no way to be sure in general that the closest timing has been found. One case that comes to mind is when a glider can pass either in front of or behind another glider from a different stage. Coming in from infinity, there's an unlimited set of timings that work fine, then thirty-some ticks that don't work, and then another range of workable timings.

For the continuous-to-incremental conversion algorithm, there shouldn't be any problem with non-trivial interacting side-effects. Any candidate partition of a single set of gliders into Stage 1 and Stage 2 will have to be tested.

If you send Stage 1 gliders, then wait for some arbitrary large amount of time, and send Stage 2 gliders, and get the same result as the original un-partitioned recipe, is there any possible reason why that partition would be invalid? I can't think of any difficult cases there. In the case where side effects from one interaction remove debris from another, those gliders are really all part of one stage, and shouldn't be partitioned anyway. (?)

There are 37 phases where crossing glider streams are a problem (from -18 to +18 generation delay).

The simple method works in most cases, and for most steps in the difficult cases. Once a synthesis has been separated to small independent chunks, it should be much easier to use brute force binary searching to attempt to sub-divide those chunks. For example, even with a chunk containing 20 gliders, that's only half a million ways to partition them into to candidate stages. The length of time it takes for the complete recipe to run should be easy to compute by observation, and will likely be around 100 generations or less. If you then delay stage 2 by every possible number up to that, it would require only around 50 million attempts - something apgsearch shows us Golly can do in its sleep. Also, these runs would be much faster than apgsearch runs, as they only need to run until the stages work (or don't), rather than the entire lifetime of the soup, and they don't need to dice up the field into objects - merely compare the entire field in a single go/no-go comparison.

No, although it goes without saying that one must be careful to preserve phase, in cases where the target area contains anything other than a still-life (not to mention apparent wind, in cases where the target is moving). In some cases, the phase can even be flexible (for example, when constructing pseudo-objects where a still-life abuts a pentadecathlon spark, there are many such syntheses where there are several phases that work, interspersed with other phases that don't work).

This is often true, but not always. For example, if the debris is a still-life, any additional delay of stage 2 usually works. Sometimes there is a trade-off between having a small number of gliders all arriving at once, and possibly cleaning up each other's debris, or having more gliders arriving in separate waves. The cheapness of the first may be outdone by the expense of getting that many closely-packed gliders into formation in the first place.

Most of the results were achieved by brute force. The main difficulty in this case was an automatic selection results. (Compare fields "selected" and "from" in the attached programm.) I managed to find a way to identify a pseudo-objects. I also excluded repetitions. Otherwise, the results it turns out too much and their analysis leaves longer than modeling.

Using it is pretty simple: you choose the type of target and bombers, as well as the area from which they attack. Modeling requires a lot of time, so you should start with a small area of attack (no more than 6 for each size). The results are stored in a format lif1 (understands Life32).
The program is written in Qt, therefore cross-platform.

Interesting approach -- it looks like there will be a good number of new and new-record syntheses in there.

And we have another new search program to start out the new year with...! (I've downloaded it, but haven't tried to get it running yet.)

Did you do any experiments with other symmetries, to try to produce things like eater2s for example? The symmetric recipes shown seem to be either 180-degree rotationally symmetric, or they have a horizontal line of symmetry.

Used different types of symmetry. When this is taken into account as the symmetry axes passing the border cells, and through their centres. The target chosen corresponding symmetry.
Symmetry was achieved either by borders (no target) or overlap when placing the bombers. The rest used the same approaches.
Part of the results was provided earlier in this topic.

Did you do any experiments with other symmetries, to try to produce things like eater2s for example? The symmetric recipes shown seem to be either 180-degree rotationally symmetric, or they have a horizontal line of symmetry.

That's odd. It's listed as 5 gliders in the core detabase itself, and other secondary contexts (e.g. the list of still-lifes buildable from 5 gliders). Apparently, the stamp collection annotation was the only one that was wrong, possibly left over from Dave Buckingham's original synthesis. The 5 glider synthesis was found by Dean Hickerson, but unfortunately, I don't know when, as that annotation was from when I was noting who found the most recent synthesis, but not dates of discovery, nor any earlier information. I now keep track of discoverer and date for each improvement, but I have only been doing that for the past few years.

Can't find this 4-glider synthesis of Long integral (xs10_3542ac, 10.19) in BobShemyakin's latest 4-glider table, and on the wiki it's listed as needing 5 gliders:
