Please combine all of those patterns into one single RLE. It's hard to look at all of them individually.

Code: Select all

The ones marked with an asterisk are extraneous results, although some could still be useful. The ones marked with a caret seem the most potentially useful. The one marked with a backtick is an oscillator miscategorized as a factory. There is a lot of repetition towards the end, and that leads me to believe not only that there are some factories I haven't found, but that there might also be some new guns, too, all opposite-parity, that the search I did missed because I forgot to take into account the differences between the same-parity and opposite-parity search spaces.

EDIT: Started a new search to take that into account; it's not exhaustive, but it's finding new results already.

Here is a 2c/12 partial from a width 12, bilaterally symmetric search (partials from two phases 6gen apart shown for clarity):

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 16, rule = B3/S2-i34q
2b6o13b3o2b3o$2b6o14b2o2b2o$bo6bo13b2o2b2o$2bo4bo$2bo4bo13b2o4b2o$b2o

2o!
Unfortunately it's pretty much width 10 and barely any improvement on the width 10 partial which seemed quite promising before I ran the width 12 search. This is from gfind as I haven't started using the modified zfind for isotropic rules, but I suspect this is well within the realm of searches where zfind is better than gfind so I won't be trying to extend it at width 14.

I thought this combination had potential for new p160 constructs (3-p160 ant gun, anyone?)[EDIT: Fixed]

But my hand-search (expectably, I guess) returned only a few results:

I must warn you, it doesn't work very well now (yet), so although it works fine for tlife, it keeps outputting false results or giving errors for a lot of other rules. I'm not sure what the bug is, but hopefully I'll find it soon.

By the way, here are 15 more "factories" from the extended search space. Unfortunately, no guns, but there are two or three "almost-guns" that might be fixable with a well-placed p160 or even eater:

Just remembered this was actually a width 12 search which attempted to extend the frontend found with a width 10 search, so I haven't actually done an exhaustive width 12 search.

Not sure if or when I'll get around to trying isotropic zfind but I won't be pursuing this search with gfind.

Have you looked at the terminal() code? That was pointed out as the culprit to some false positives in the adapting gfind thread.

That's definitely not the problem; zfind doesn't actually check the rule except in one case which I know isn't causing the problem, and anyway, the terminal() thing is a gfind problem, so I'm almost positive that the only problem is that the rule-generation code has a bug.
