I think LifeWiki is the only one that says it the other way around, so why dont we just edit LifeWiki?

Umm... that is David Buckingham's Machine Gun and has been known for at least 15 years. Check Chris C's gun collection.

Right then.

Still, should it have a wiki article?

Maybe. IIRC, it was the first Herschel-based gun, which may lend it some historical significance.

How about wiki article with the whole gun collection? I know it's kinda big request, on the other hand - guns are quite important, and the fact that there is only handful of guns in the wiki, makes the wiki lacking quite basic information. At least a mention of some sort that the collection exists, and an effort was done latelly to improve the gun collection using syringe is kinda important info.

The same goes for Herschel conduits - wiki lacks basic intro, while in the past two-three years there was some huge advance in this area.

I have constructed a period 232 ak-47 breeder (it was too big to show in the life viewer so I uploaded it as an attachment).

Is this interesting enough to be worth posting, or is it kind of trivial?

It's definitely worth posting, because some (real) work has been done to construct it.
Goldtiger997 wrote: is it kind of trivial?
I think it's kinda trivial indeed, but it's a good practice.

Maybe it's a good idea to have a seperate thread for constructions of this sort.

You can just put rle code inside code tags. We can copy that to clipboard and paste it into golly. (Unless the rle's too long to fit on one post.)

Yeah, it's over 100K (well, over 100,000 bytes anyway) and the current forum limit is only 60,000 bytes. Sometimes saving as a macrocell file is a useful trick, but it doesn't help in this case.

A Lua or Python "pattern script" version of this could be packed into 10K or less, and under 5K wouldn't surprise me, so that really seems like the way to go for a forum-quotable pattern.

Unfortunately you can't turn the mid-flip beehive into any sort of induction coil, so this doesn't really work.
This doesn't work either.

Can any objects be place on the "fuse" end of this still life to form an oscillator?

Code: Select all

Of course it doesn't; you can't just stack two rotors on top of one another and expect it to work.
If you want to look for some just get WLS and look for a p3 with the fuse cells always ON and the cells "behind" the fuse always OFF.

Then do any period. The period you search for is independent (mostly) of your initial conditions.

The still-life can be made symmetric:

Code: Select all

4bo$3bobo$3bo2bo$b3o3bo$o7bo$bo3b3o$2bo2bo$3bobo$4bo!

I ended up making this still-life when trying to edit the symmetric variant (after making it).

Code: Select all

6b2o$5bo2bo$4bob2obo$4bo3bobo$2b3o3bobo$bo7bo$obo3b3o$obo3bo$bob2obo$2bo2bo$3b2o!
