I see.

Then again, they're still discoveries in the planet's favourite cellular automaton...

Maybe they could be sorted into a different category from the symmetrical lifes?

There is also the slight fact that I'm trying to encourage users to search b3s23/C1 more so than other rules/symmetries. Hence why the 'discoveries', progress chart, and almost all of the badges are specific to b3s23/C1.

Makes sense.

Suggestion: why not show the badges that haven't been unlocked yet and make it display something like "Search 1842963 more soups in b3s23/C1 to unlock this badge!"

I like that idea.

Here's another one. We (now) already have Trillionaire and Gigamyriad; this could be generalized, with badges coming in sets and each successive badge in a given set being progressively harder to attain. Badges in a set could be organized into tiers: say bronze, silver and gold, though not all sets would necessarily have all tiers.

So, for example, Trillionaire and Gigamyriad could be the silver and gold tiers in the "Objects contributed" set (and a 100G object badge might be added at the bronze tier). "Conchita" could be the gold tier (and only badge, for now) in the "Phoenix" set. "Voyager" could be a bronze-tier badge, with silver- and gold-tier badges being awarded for seeing spaceships earlier (1st occurrence instead of one of the first 20). And so on.

Badges could also be awarded multiple times as necessary, so instead of just "Limitless" you might get "Limitless × 3" if you discovered three new natural infinite-growth patterns.

And you could have all these badges have point values and display a total on people's user pages to encourage them to compete further. (Though obviously some fine-tuning would be needed to gauge how many points any badge should be worth.)

Oh, and finally, you could have badges not directly related to soup-searching as such, like "Exterminator" (find a bug in apg*), "Universal Destructor" (break Catagolue) etc. These would be awarded manually by Calcyman to deserving users.

I feel like contributing 1 billion objects to b3s23/c1 would give a bronze medal (orange), 10 billion silver (white), 1 trillion gold (yellow), 10 trillion platinum (pink), and 100 trillion palladium (light blue).

One more thing: why not there could be a "pattern namer" user class who gives names to unnamed patterns (such as long^7 boat, which doesn't seem to be named yet)?

The link on https://catagolue.appspot.com/home still points to apgnano

I hope that this will be changed soon so that, when the homepage gives the "recommended" search program to use, it won't be one which can only search one rule and symmetry and whose only advantage is being quicker.

Come to think of it that makes a lot of sense. It was just bugging me because it was kinda outdated.

Anyway, have you considered this idea yet?

Done.

It breaks the paradigm that all censuses should be independent and sandboxed.

So if you did it anyway, would that make it BS symmetry violation?

Well that kinda sucks.

Since both the ov and zz columns are going to be forever one link long, why not stack them on top of each other?

Like this:

Unusual growth

zz

Oversized

ov

Also, what about the glitched "z" category that sometimes appears (usually on hacked versions)? Can you move that to under "Unusual growth" alongside zz?

I also think that calcyman should be able to manually add a filter to certain rules that breaks up combined spaceships (like two spaceships being classified as one) after they are submitted. This would help find things in rules such as GlideLife, where a lot of unique spaceships are xp4, and so are the combined ones.

I've been thinking, what about an elementary spaceship search program for explosives rules like DryLife, which run a soup fo a set number of generations, recording any escaping spaceships and submitting them to Catagolue?

@muzik
Or what about one that removes all objects after a set duration of time? This would allow DryLife, while also allowing oscillators that are shuttle. I'd say 100 would be a good amount.

Then, wouldn't it register some random reactions as spaceships, rakes and the like?

I just ran a script to determine that there are 171 objects left in Okrasinski's census that haven't occurred in b3s23/C1, even though the latter is over 200 times larger:

Code: Select all

x = 2462, y = 161, rule = B3/S23

This suggests that some objects in Catagolue's census won't be seen again until hundreds, even thousands, of times more soups get searched.

Since some object names on Catagolue are taken from that census, it leaves plenty of named objects without occurrences: http://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xs2 ... f0f9/b3s23

Only 3 of these unseen objects are oscillators:

Code: Select all

In other news, we are rapidly approaching 100 trillion objects. I predict that that threshold will be reached within an hour of 2016-06-20 22:30:00 UTC.

And to think over 50% of these were contributed by one person...

and that we sTILL haven't seen a loafer yet...

So when would we hit the mark of... is it quadrillion? or tetrillion?

It's quadrillion, and that will be when we have ten times the amount of objects we have now. I'll probably start running a few instances soon, by the way.

EDIT: It seems 8x32 is not in the list of accepted symmetries. Will this be readded?

Congratulations, Catagolue, you just surpassed 100 trillion objects!

At 2016-06-20 23:15:00 UTC, which is within an hour of 2016-06-20 22:30:00. I win!

(It doesn't really matter all that much, anyway.)

The prize is making an advancement or several within the cellular automaton community. Within the first 100t objects, we have a 45-cell still life, 2 Coe ships, and god knows what else.

Well, wonder what will crop up when we reach a quadrillion. (honestly why do we have so many words for numbers? we don't call chemical compounds with four oxygen atoms a quadoxide, but a tetroxide, yet we still have quadrillion as opposed to tetrillion...)
