c/10 spaceship beat Gemini's record

Post by codeholic » March 9th, 2016, 5:13 pm

Most users ever online was 442 on 7 minutes ago
Ironically, both incidents were caused by newcomers in the community.

Interesting! Did a news item about the copperhead spaceship show up somewhere very popular, just recently?

I must be badly out of date, since I'm clearly not paying attention to whatever-it-is. Can we maybe get a few hundred more people interested in running apgsearch, by mentioning Catagolue pointedly enough?

EDIT: Probably Nathaniel has got more information about sources people come from.

Yes, it got at least as high as number 8 on the front page of Hacker News. HN drives traffic the way Slashdot used to.

I have just made an account on Hacker News and upvoted both entries.

I encourage you to do the same thing. It only takes a few minutes.

Thanks. It's nice that Catagolue got a mention in the comments. I suppose the next major discovery or milestone might merit a dedicated blog entry -- might attract a little more attention (and CPU cycles). Come to think of it, a similar article (codeholic's, about the pufferfish) caused a similar spike in interest in Catagolue a year ago.

It was also really good to see Chris Rowett's LifeViewer get a well-deserved compliment in passing:

No, it didn't. At least not by a significant amount - there are less than a hundred people subscribed to the subreddit, and the traffic stats page, which I've made public (as moderator), shows that it usually gets less than half that many pageviews per day.

Well Sir Robin has beaten this record considerably!:

They most likely heard about it on Hacker News.

Yesterday, the record was beaten again, with 2038 users online at once. Does anyone know why?

Obviously it's because of that new c/9 spaceship that was discovered a couple days ago.

Joking aside, no.

How? ENORMOUS_NAME created a puppet army to celebrate his non-discovery?

Hmm, not sure what you're saying here. I see no user named "AAAAAA_AAAAA", I doubt Mr. Enormous would create thousands of accounts / open conwaylife.com on a thousand or so different computers. I don't see anything suspicious in the join dates of the new accounts either.

I don't think it's related to the Subnautica thing at all. In that case it was a user making a lot of (helpful) edits to link a lot of pages to the French wiki of Subnautica. Plus, that would only take one account doing a lot of things, not two thousand accounts. (I am aware though that the "most users online" counts guests)

Perhaps something happened somewhere in the vast fibers of the Interspace..? It's a big jump from a record of 442 users to a record of 2038, especially with seemingly nothing too major happening.

Oooh, perhaps he will have invented a time travel machine for conwaylife.com forums! That's why there are so many people!

We had 2846 users 3 hours ago. Again, there doesn't seem to be any cause. It seems too large to be normal (non-breakthrough) activity, but too small to be an attack.
