Anyway, given that there wasn't a two-glider solution, my next idea was to look in my slow-salvo lookup table. @Gustavo, you might find that really useful. If a pattern shows up as an output in this table, it must be possible to build it with three or four gliders.

In this case, just do a text search for "century" in that linked message, and you'll find that there's a way to hit a boat with one glider to get a century. A boat can be synthesized with two more gliders, so there's one possible three-glider recipe... or actually, a couple of infinite groups of three-glider recipes, but they're all boringly similar.

Post a question here if there's something you don't understand, but really you shouldn't have any trouble finding the right boat+glider interaction -- I think at worst there are only 37 possibilities to check.

dvgrn is the one that will do the script for Hersrch.
I run it and find a suitable conduit.
Someone else will be employed of finding a nice H-to-ship.
The earning is the new HWSS-to-G we will earn... as a team!

No, I don't think it's very likely that it can.

The lack of an edge-shooting X-to-Ship converter is hindering enough that I would consider this insufficient for "giving us an edge in HWSS-to-G tech".

Even if this pattern had some potential, I highly doubt that someone could convince another member of this forum to do the Hersrch search for you; I'm sure that you're capable of running the Hersrch search yourself.

I found the Hersrch params too confusing (also, why not to use them directly in command line?), and I did not understood the arguments that defined where the Herschel would end.

Hmm. A pattern search-by-name for "Century" should have found it under methuselahs. Regardless, looking on the Methuselahs page would find it quickly enough. It's also called a Bookend, and there are a very large number of objects that contain bookends in their structures, and/or names. Finally, a pattern search for one of the early generations should find it.

That's a good idea. I have a specific set of syntheses for simple long-lived unstable patterns (i.e. methuselahs), but I haven't yet put together a similar set of short-lived unstable patterns. That's probably a good idea to add to my list.

Also inside 100x100 is this small HWSS-to-Herschel converter. Here the Herschel is capped by an H-to-G, but you could add Herschel circuitry directly to the output H instead of just getting a glider out. Maybe the HWSS-to-H with the smallest bounding box could be a separate Optimization Game:

There's likely something more convenient out there than that HWSS-boat collision. So, I've adapted a Python script to do CatForce runs for collisions of a HWSS with blocks, beehives, boats, loaves, tubs, ponds, ships, and blinkers. I'll report the most promising results shortly--they'll be quick 1-catalyst searches with combine-results turned on, using Bellman favorites in addition to the usual Spartan suspects. Then if those aren't helpful, 2-catalyst searches using a smaller catalyst list.

I really tried a lot to optimize that in any means, and my mouse almost broke, but I need a rest by now, I can't continue, especially with a mouse that behaves strangely.

EDIT: I thought a little and maybe the pi don't fit. I am going to try another reaction after the rest. Idea: a Python program runs ptbsearch instead of catgl, that will provide the benefit of the transparent catalysts and still find nice stuff to perturb a HWSS.

That HWSS + block -> Pi was investigated by thunk already, it works nicely with a known Pi -> 2G to give this HWSS -> G. But optimization might still be out there, with different targets still.

Indeed it is! The right substitution can make these circuits almost elegant. Or, well, at least they're a lot more elegant than the old pre-syringe pre-Snark circuitry used to be.

It still doesn't come near improving on thunk's HWSS+block solution, though (repeat time 573).

Maybe now is a good time to follow Gustavo's lead, take a break, and give up on the HWSS+boat reaction for now. Will keep my fingers crossed that Kazyan's search will turn up a nicely restored bait object, which might get the repeat time down to something much more more reasonable.

Not done yet, but there is a nice HWSS + beehive -> Honey Farm reaction that requires no other catalysts. A separate CatForce or Bellman search might be able to restore the beehive by placing something convenient off to the right here:

Which Dave himself improved upon with a 537-tick variant.

This is almost as good as we can hope for without a direct conversion. Kazyan's partial seems like a good start, as there's only one problem to solve here (turning the LOM into a beehive at the right place). If only I had the time right now to seriously experiment with this...

This is unnecessarily complicated. This still-life takes 6 gliders to make. There are also glider-boat and glider-eater collisions that make B-heptomino,s and and both boat and eater can be synthesized from only 2 gliders.

The point is to find a way to put the beehive back in the same location. When you do that, you'll have a pattern worth posting. There's really no point in drawing people's attention to random explosions, unless the output is at least as rare as a *WSS spaceship -- and sometimes not even then.
