Absolutely useless, infinitely long, 3c/11 wave that leaves behind blocks.

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 273, rule = B3/S23

That's pretty cool, I must say. It is hard to believe you found it just by pure accident, did you?

Nope, used JLS. I knew about the 3c/11 front end, but wanted to see if I could complete it with a periodic boundary condition.

Almost certainly useless H->Pi:

Code: Select all

x = 24, y = 27, rule = LifeHistory
4.C$4.3C$7.C$6.2C$6.4B$8.4B$7.6B$2C5.7B4.2C$.C5.8B2.B2CB$.C.CB.10B.B.

!
With current conduits, it's only possible to turn the pi into a B heading back down, and then any reasonable conduit with a B input blocks the original input H when you attempt to attach it.

Inspired by the 3c/11 wave, here are two patterns in the same vein: frontend travelling at 2c/9; leaving behind beehives and blinkers at p36 and blocks and beehives at p99.

Code: Select all

x = 100, y = 130, rule = B3/S23:T0,132

With a lot of discussion about *WSS-to-G, I tried using a blinker as the bait. It's not better than the beehive bait in terms of recovery or usability, but it exists, so now people can look at it.

p2 odd LWSS-to-G, recovery time 645. (odd means the next LWSS must follow an odd number of ticks behind, since the blinker is restored with the opposite parity). It's actually an LWSS-to-R, but I have it attached to the transparent-pond R-to-G.

Code: Select all

x = 99, y = 73, rule = B3/S23

Two mostly failed attemps in the ongoing LWSS-to-G search...

On the left the block and the boat seem to be out of reach of any catalysts... They can of course be shot down by gliders.

On the right a LWSS-to-G that need an H to reset. Can't find a way to make a smaller LWSS-to-G with that.

8-cell squiggle lasts an unusually long time (not really notable - lasts 3937 gens and it doesn't create any remotely interesting objects unless beehive-on-block counts)

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 2, rule = B3/S23
5o$5b3o!
By the way, I found the post that towerator was referring to here (for the record, I've found two fuses - one dirty one and one that leaves behind an HF+block). I think all diagonally symmetric SLs have that property, though.

Useless transparent block:

Code: Select all

Weird boat catalysis:

3b2o$3bobo$4bo4$3b3o$3bo$3b3o2$3o$bob2o$bo3bo$2bobo$3bo!
Also, might it be possible to collide some object or constellation with a glider to produce a herschel, and then have the herschel's FNG hit the remaining debris to reconstruct the constellation?

And does anyone have some sort of collection of low-period ways to make glider salvos? Working at about p20-p25 would be fine.

Describing it would be too complicated anyway. Just take a look at it. (I found it while checking if the syringe could make a dependent G-to-H.)

I found a reburnable fuse! :D It moves at (22,3)c/53 and runs on gliders. I think a helix would be able to support it too, though the first concern comes due to it moving very close to the speed limit, but that's workable.

So why post in useless discoveries?

The sparks are incredibly pathetic, and you have to cram the B's so close together to make them interact that I think it probably is impossible to actually do any work using the reaction without destroying the glider necessary to keep it going:

Code: Select all

x = 34, y = 64, rule = LifeHistory

Thanks for the link, I even remember having read that post before...

Also, if someone can figure out a clever way to provide one of these gliders in addition to the H, it could make a working H-to-LWSS:

This fuse is known, having been already discovered independently twice, the first time by Dave Greene (while investigating blockic splitters) and the second time by me (looking for glider collisions that could be used as reburnable fuses). It can also be supported by gliders (which is how I found it), as well as blocks.

This fuse is actually not useless, since it produces a glider in both directions and it's (fairly) clean, leaving behind the fuel it consumes.

These are the same properties that made the 31c/240 spaceship possible. (!!)

It's definitely not very convenient though, as it appears to take at least 4 rows of these things to make a properly reburnable fuse, and almost certainly more rows will be needed in order to make a full spaceship.

Not much work has gone into trying to make a spaceship with this though, as it was pointed out while work was still going on towards much easier spaceship velocities. Nobody seems interested in building a (13,1)c/31 ship due to the ridiculously high period multiple the helix has (15~16x), which basically just leaves the adjustable period caterpillar-style HBK, the engineless design, and this fuse as likely candidates for reaching a spaceship velocity via non-trivial means.
