New p30, and 14 trillion objects. There are also now more than 100 naturally occuring p3 oscillators. Here are some of the interesting p3 oscillators, including Kazyan's Cuphook-Stillator hybrid:

Code: Select all

#C Interesting rare p3 oscillators.

o27bo2bo$35b2o45b2o!
There are also two occurences of the newly named "boring p24", and A few eater eating pentadecathlon variants are showing up. The first one is already named "Pentadecathlon on eater", but I suppose the second could be "Trans-dock on block eating pentadecathlon" or "Pentadecathlon on dock on Trans-block".

In spaceships, there's now 23 natural spaceships in aymmetric Conway's Game of Life searches, so 19 non-standard natural spaceships.

There's also spam on several pages, such as Tumbler and Block-laying switch engine.

I'm not sure if it is a well-specified name, because it's got a twin, namely http://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp2 ... 7401/b3s23 which hasn't been found in the wild yet though.

I don't know why it didn't get censused by Catagolue, but Apple Bottom discovered a new natural infinite-growth pattern, yl1152_1_275_a3591abbc6ddbf461332c01353cae282. See the post here for details.

I think a sufficiently small double switch engine seed might break the record of simsim's Switch Engine Ping Pong?

This is very exciting! (It's now in the census, by the way.) I seem to recall someone correctly anticipated that a doubled switch-engine would be the next interesting moving object to appear.
Scorbie wrote:I think a sufficiently small double switch engine seed might break the record of simsim's Switch Engine Ping Pong?
Quite possibly...

By the way, this puffer pair certainly deserves a name by virtue of being the third naturally-occurring infinite-growth pattern. (Apple Bottom, do you have a name for it?)

Speaking of names, Catagolue object pages now display the common name, if one exists, as the title. For example:

https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp ... 55bc/b3s23

Also, there's been a load of spam on Catagolue comments. I've now banned comments of length <= 1 together with the substrings ".js" and "href", and flushed out most of the offending comments.

Just two things:
1) The Boring p24 doesn't have a name. (Writing it like this looks as if it were found by Boring.)
2) What are you planning to do on:

I'm not sure that this particular double switch engine deserves a proper name just because it happened to be first one that occurred naturally, because double switch engines were known and studied long before that. Moreover, we'll definitely see more different double engines in Catagolue in the future, so I would say, a number (as in the case of paired standard spaceships) or another classification would be more appropriate.

Aww shucks, let me think about that.

How about "the pony express"? I like that mental image of a rider galloping off into the sunset, leaving behind only hoofprints - though I hope the sideways gliders don't represent the occasional piece of mail getting lost!

Of course codeholic also has a good point when he points out that there will likely be other, similar patterns discovered eventually. So if the community decides that this pattern is not worthy of a nickname, I will understand and respect that.

Here's my strictly personal opinion regarding this: A new natural infinite growth pattern was discovered in 44? years, and I think this is a pretty big deal. (Although the excitement is not as much as the Pufferfish.) After all, it's the __first__, so why not give it a name? (Although I agree that this kind of thing would come out every month or so.)
About Codeholic's idea of giving switch engine names: I think classification is a good idea in general, but umm, I think there should be a whole lot of numbers needed if we're numbering them, and I'm not even sure if we could count it all, considering that some puffers can have different outputs by their initial conditions.

How about we name it "first ark" or something like that?

I'm guessing that the following aren't too unlikely from occuring:

Osc-P3:

•Snake pit 2

Osc-P4:

•Jack
•Eater/block frob

Osc-p5:

•Pseudo-barberpole
•Pentoad
•Heart
•Hooks

Osc-p6:

•A for all

Osc-p7:

•28P7.2

SS-p4:

•*WSS-on-*WSS-on-*WSS
•X66
•Sidecar
•Pushalong 1

SS-p5:

•30P5H2V0

SS-p7:

•Loafer

SS-p16:

•Coe ship

I'm a bit confused. Even though this occurred in a C1 soup, I have noticed that there were many two-ship arks found earlier in symmetrical soups, so this one is hardly the first. Am I missing something obvious?

Indeed. I would never question that.
Scorbie wrote:After all, it's the __first__, so why not give it a name? (Although I agree that this kind of thing would come out every month or so.)
But there is a big difference between "the first" and "the first naturally occurring since 40+ years". Let's put it this way: merely a fact that a certain pattern occurred naturally doesn't make it notable among other patterns of the same type. Do you now remember, which mold variant occurred naturally first? I don't remember either. On the other hand, if we see, that a certain type of double switch engines occurs more often than others, that would make it more notable. At the moment there is not enough statistics to judge about it.
gmc_nxtman wrote:How about we name it "first ark" or something like that?
Technically it's not an ark, because in an ark switch engines can't survive independently, whereas this pattern is mere a pair of a block-laying and a glider-producing switch engines, whose debris interact. You can easily check that by deleting one or another.

Well, patterns found in symmetric soups are not considered "natural enough" by all. Thus they are sometimes called "semi-" or "almost natural".

The common name list now contains Apple Bottom's proposed name for the yl1152.

I agree with Codeholic. If the yl1152 gets a name, it should be a unique description of how the switch engines interact. It shouldn't be too hard to think of one.
Also, don't forget that the second switch engine can travel as far behind the first as it wants, because it only interacts with its debris after it stabilizes:

If you really want to give it an arbitrary name, that's fine. It wouldn't be the first time, (for example,"candlefrobra" is an arbitrary name among the "_______ and long hook eating tub" series), but I was thinking something more descriptive, like "first natural ark" or something similar.

Random though: it would be fun to call it the 'undesigned ark". This is a reference to the fact creationnists try to show that there are natural thing that were designed. This is a "designed object"(and a biblical one, oh the irony) that appeared entirely out of blue. Hence the undesigned ark.

Apple Bottom, notice my new avatar?

Also I think the new yl1152 should not be named the Pony Express, since it does not carry any information. It should instead be called switch engine with shoot, since it reminds me of the identically named construct in Flakes (the shoot is the one producing debris other than blocks and cannot exist without the "ladder", i.e. the other switch engine).

Wow, this yl1152 naming is quite controversial.

Also, we're at 15 * 10^12 objects now, as of four minutes ago:
