No, I don't think the phoenix has ever occurred naturally in an asymmetric soup.

It must just be the case that it has a frequency substantially lower than 10^-12.

The latter one. Seeing as objects need space to evolve and the Herschel travels more than 32 cells across its lifetime, I think the 2048×2048 torus was the better soup generator of the two (indeed, these ones are the source of the commonly cited object frequencies on the wiki).

I decided to expand on Extrementhusiast's calculation in the v1.0 thread after an insight based on Kiran's concept of soup propagation distance. Some soups, even if similar, might just converge in a few generations because the only difference is a dying spark or something like that. The above number will contain some soups that are identical in spirit, if not actual starting configuration.

So, I modified my script in the soup propagation distance thread to give the empirical probability that the propagation distance would not be zero for each of the cells in random 16x16 soups. If a cell's state doesn't matter (propagation distance zero), the ash is the same whatever its position, but if it does matter, the ash will be different. For reasons similar to ones outlined here, we can approximate the number of meaningfully distinct soups as ∏(1 + P(i))/16, where i is a cell, P(i) is its matching value in the attached grid, and dividing by 16 accounts for rotations and reflections. For these empirical probabilities—10,000 trials each—the total is about 3.68 * 10^71 soups.

Give or take a few billion. Drat, the 10-trillion mark has scrolled off the hauls screen already, so I don't see how to find out who contributed the ten billionth object...!

I've done a successful test with apgsearch 2.4, by the way, interrupting my wifi connection for a couple of reporting cycles. Apgsearch successfully reported the accumulated results instead of segfaulting. I'd suggest anyone with an unreliable Internet connection should upgrade to v2.4 sooner rather than later.

In particular, the "List of common oscillators" page is uncertain about rankings beyond the spark coil or thereabouts, but according to my spreadsheet of today's /textcensus, the order isn't even ambiguous until we get to 20P2 (39th most common oscillator by catagolue).

We can definitely go as far as xp2_318czw3553 (trans-beacon and cap) without there being any ambiguity in the total order of oscillators by frequency, with the possible exception of the two varieties of queen bee shuttle.

EDIT: BTW, I noticed that a few weeks ago one of my searcher instances identified a new pattern I'd not seen before, yl1152_1_275_a3591abbc6ddbf461332c01353cae282. However, it doesn't appear in the census now, there's no yl1152 objects, and the haul it came from isn't available either (anymore?).

I cleared out the rejected hauls without checking them properly, assuming that they were all caused by the pre-v2.42 bug.

As for the mistaken pathological in your latest soup, that was a piece of exhaust which stabilises into the disjoint union of some still-lifes, oscillators and a glider. Since [the disjoint union] is aperiodic due to the receding glider, but was identified as a single object, this was classified as pathological. I've now amended this bug in v2.43.

So, yes, I suggest you upgrade to v2.43 as soon as possible. (Also, sorry about the bugs that keep getting discovered. It's difficult to prepare for rare events that appear with a frequency of less than 10^-12.)

By the way, I'm re-computing and committing your yl1152 haul at the moment (and correctly attributing it to your account). It should enter the system in a couple of hours or so.

Only b3s23/C1. Also, there isn't yet a scheduled task to perform the attributions, so it has to be called manually for each object or tabulation. EDIT: Now it's done automatically by the regular cron process.
