Doesn't seem like too big of a surprise -- higher bit counts seem to appear according to a fairly predictable power law. There's a big bias toward even-bit-count still lifes, but a 33-bitter was still by far the most likely odd-bit-count still life to appear next in the b3s23/C1 search results.

Here was my crackpot theory about the reason for the bias toward even bit counts.

The only other prediction I recall making was that we'd never again see a continuous range of bit counts from xs4 to xsN, once the relatively common xs40 appeared.

I think I'm still pretty safe on that prediction -- some xs>40 is very very likely to show up before we manage to fill in xs35, xs37 and xs39. The odds are that we'll need to generate well over 10^13 still lifes before we see the first xs39 -- probably more like 10^14 -- and we're "only" at 5x10^11 still lifes at the moment.

Yeah, I vote for 'long Aries betwixt two blocks'.

What?!
I'm not sure why the bold italic 'what' followed by an interrobang was necessary; it seems well overdue based on the bell-shaped distribution of still life counts on http://catagolue.appspot.com/statistics. (By the way, if you hadn't already noticed, the columns are now hyperlinked to the relevant census pages.)

That said, I am pretty surprised that a xs34 still hasn't appeared. I seem to recall there being one in Andrzej's census.

Speaking of which, we're now at 500 * 10^9 objects, putting us comfortably ahead of Andrzej's census of 477 * 10^9 objects. Any bets on how many objects we'll have by the end of 2015? If Brett Berger continues running his high-performance cluster 24/7, then we'll have somewhere in the region of 15 * 10^12.

It would be great if they could run through the end of 2015.

On the one hand, I graduate in May, so I won't be able to check up on them very frequently. If the staff delete graduated students' accounts and their contents then I can't promise past May, maybe June. If I don't get deleted, I will still be visiting the school for my girlfriend, and I can do checkups in case of power baubles or the like.

On the other hand, it's possible they'll truck on, and at graduate school I'll have another comparable array available, giving twice the throughput. We'll see.

Also if I get deleted, I can use my girlfriend's account.. or an excitable frosh.

Yes it can. Awkward phrasing leads to awkward implications :P

Glad to see new things churning out of catagolue! The 66-pointer definitely stood out when I checked up on things this morning.

Well if you remember we had discussions on what to name a similar object some days ago. I am convinced my clef notation is better suited for the occasion; it handles a larger family of still lifes and uses no obscure words at all.

Whoops! I remembered wrong. And yeah, I'm also pretty sure that the still life counts are not likely to become continuous again.

EDIT: It would be interesting if the odd bit counts are conquered by aries(plural).

I think higher still lifes are mostly symmetric, so I think the frequency would be even harsher to the odd bit-count still lifes...

I'm okay with the clef notation, but note that all the clefs (or aries(plural) or ph... never mind.) are of different sizes, so we can go with short, long and long long aries betwixt two blocks.

In an apgsearch run on my laptop, I found a beehive-with-tail. I'm not sure how common this is.
OTOH, I was actually looking at my computer screen when it showed up. (It runs slow, about 175 soups/s, on my laptop.) The haul should be up in a few hours; I'm only at 190K soups out of 5M. Seed Mu2rKpejz5wU, symmetry C4_4.
I hope this'll help in syringe glider-construction.

EDIT (not five minutes later): I just saw a short slow-salvo construction of beehive-with-tail; this still might improve that construction.

Beehive with tails are the 47th most common object in Life. They occur in about one in 40000 16 by 16 soups (and probably have about the same frequency in 4-fold symmetrical 32 by 32 soups). As far as I know, the minimum synthesis for a beehive with tail is four gliders, but that might get reduced to three if it hasn't been already.

LWSS on HWSS 1 has joined the "not just once" crowd. Here's its second occurrence:

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 8 Y -10 ]]
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
bbbboooboboobooo$
bbboooooooobbooo$
oobbbbobbbboobbo$

oobobobooboooobo$
bboooooooobboobb$
obooobbboooobooo$
bobobbboobboooob$
booobbbboooobobo$
bbooooboooobbooo!
I bet these reactions happen about 10 times as often as we observe them, and usually just crash back into the soup.

Edit: also in the "Not just once" crowd, the fox:

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 7 ]]
x = 40, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
3b2o$3b2o3$4b2o$4b2o29b5o$34bobo2bo$34bob4o$35bo2$3o$obo$obo$32bo$8b2o

o$4b3o25bobo$4b3o$23b2o$23b2o!
Edit: Also a "why not" from asymmetry gives a reduced synthesis. The wiki says 27, this is at most 22 (the two gliders from a distance are my 5-minute-attempt at reducing the clutter but are by no means optimal).

Code: Select all

x = 76, y = 87, rule = B3/S23

$bo2$51bo$51b2o$50bobo2$74bo$73b2o$73bobo!
Edit: Also another *WSS on *WSS, this time LWSS on MWSS 1:

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 5 ]]
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
booboobbboooboob$

oobbobboobobboob$
bboboboobobbobbb$
bbbboooooboobbbo$
ooobbboboobbbobb$
obobobobbbbbbobb$
obbooobobobbbobo!
Base reaction for the LWSS on MWSS 1: R + G + Block + junk:

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 7 ]]
x = 11, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
5b2o$4bo2bo$5b2o$6bo3$3o$o$bo$9b2o$3b3o3b2o$2bo2bo$bo4bo$bo4bo$5b2o$2b
