I was running JLS to find a p8 which flipped over every four steps, paused it halfway through, and realized that part of the pattern could interact with an eater 3 the same way as it did with the pattern JLS was using. This pattern just loops the loaves together.

first-encounter should be >= 1.

Might take some time - as all your parameter set to high values. Consider lowering repair-interval or max-active for the first couple of runs - you might get results faster with lower values.

Here are some things I would suggest:

  • I don't usually set a filter pattern, because I worry there will be some reaction I wasn't expecting that gives interesting but different output. I only use a filter pattern when I am really sure about what I want and am getting too much extraneous output.
With these changes made, I suggest running the search to completion with max-active = 4 (this should be pretty fast, but likely won't find anything). If this finishes without finding what you want, try increasing max-active to 5 or 6 and run the search again. Keep doing this until you find what you're looking for or the searches start taking too long. You can also try varying some of the other parameters like first-encounter, last-encounter, or repair-interval to see if those speed up the search.

max-live is nice filter, built-in into golly recursion. This is the main "shortcut" for VERY large search spaces where both max-active and repair-interval should be pretty big. This limits the search space very seriously, and can allow the execution to be so much faster - obviously with a cost.

I also want to add max-gen flag, for cases like this that don't need to iterate after generation 18.
