Yes, I was considering adding a dict to the class Soup to accomplish this. It should only take a few lines of code.
Dave Greene wrote:So of course I'm really most interested in the still lifes that nobody has ever seen floating in the soup before... and for that we'll need a central server.
Precisely. At the moment I'm getting to grips with the Google App Engine so that I can implement this in the cloud (in Java, most probably):

Wow! That's not just another fun still life, it is a
century eater! And now it has a relatively simple slow salvo synthesis!

Nice find! This actually does open up a lot of practical possibilities for using the bistable switch in self-constructing circuitry... in case anyone ever wants to do that.
Here's a slightly more cleaned-up version. It will still take quite a few slow-salvo gliders to build that initial constellation, but it's a very simple recipe to find now:
Code: Select all
x = 27, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

The boat can be replaced with a block in multiple ways. Here are two examples:

The leftmost blinker could also be replaced, but since it is already part of a half traffic light, its probably more efficient to leave it as is.

This is how the first period-30 glider gun was constructed, and subsequently the first breeder - ship + glider = queen bee. It can now be done more cheaply, as a shuttle can be made from three gliders. In fact, there are several 4-glider collisions that make a shuttle plus one appropriately-positioned block.

While this is an impressive result from the census point of view, it's not terribly useful from the synthesis perspective, because the number of additional gliders required to clean up all the escaping gliders, not to mention the rest of the ash, would make this an extremely expensive mold synthesis. If you were to be extremely lucky and find a single "magic bullet" glider that could eliminate it all, it would create an impressive 4-glider mold, but even if it takes only 2 gliders, this would be equivalent to the current best synthesis, but also much larger and messier.

Long hook as a catalyst:

Unfortunately, there is a spark that destroys the block and long hook before it catalyzes anything. Just manually delete the spark when it occurs. I hope this reaction turns out to be useful.

Possible seed for a 2-glider salvo:
Code: Select all
x = 16, y = 25, rule = B3/S23

2bo$5bo2bo$6b2o!
Incidentally, there's a cool reaction with the cleanup block where the block rotates an r-mango and gets shifted itself:
Code: Select all
x = 9, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
7b2o$7b2o2$2b3o$bo2bo$o2bo$b2o!
Unfortunately, it is not in the correct place to turn this into an oscillator.

Odd reaction for creating a string of tied very long canoes:
Code: Select all
x = 35, y = 35, rule = B3/S23:T35,35
