Fano database

Post by Hdjensofjfnen » March 4th, 2019, 1:55 am

The Fano database of gliders is in desperate need of updating. There is this 13-cell c/3o, the "cicada", in B3/S01367, that isn't in it.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 9, rule = B3/S01367
3bo$3bo$bo$bo2b3o2$3o2$b2o$2bo!

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3
3bo$4bo$o2bo$2o2$2o$o2bo$4bo$3bo!

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S2-i3-y4i
4b3o$6bo$o3b3o$2o$bo!

That's far from the only example. The B3/S23 page, for example, doesn't list the loafer or the copperhead. The Fano site hasn't been updated in at least several years, and I think the creator David Eppstein either isn't working with CA anymore or hasn't been contactable by anyone (?).

I can contact him via Wikipedia.

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 9, rule = B3-jqr/S01c2-in3

Or you could contact him directly: https://www.ics.uci.edu/~eppstein/contact.html

Apparently he still thinks about CA now and then, e.g. https://11011110.github.io/blog/2018/12 ... ntual.html

As far as the glider database goes I don't think that's been updated in quite some time. There are two relevant threads on this board if you are interested in known results:
http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1787
http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1074

For the specific rule you mentioned there is already a c/3 known in that rule. Please note comments from the glider db:
gliders.db wrote:# There are far too many gliders known even just in life to just list
# them all (in fact, there are usually infinitely many types of gliders
# whenever there is any). The primary reason for including a glider in
# this list is to cover every known combination of speed and rules.
# Secondarily, I am also including particularly small gliders, or
# gliders that work unchanged in many different rules.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

Would it be possible to add nontotalistic rules to the database?
I guess that would be far too much.

I had been working on a user-editable NT glider database, but nobody wanted to add to it. The discussion is here.
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.
