Catagolue Discussion Thread

A thread for discussing about Catagolue, but not apgsearch. Muzik requested this because the apgsearch threads were getting a bit cluttered with Catagolue discussion, so I thought I should make one of these "Gneral Discussion" threads.

Now,
Is Catagolue ever going to get animated generations, b0, and LTL pattern svgs?
Are we ever going to be able to customize our apgprofiles?

Requested Edit By Danny:
Catagolue resets every 7:00 UTC

Animations for a select few B0 rules should be relatively easy - specifically B01245/S0125, which is exactly the same as Day and Night.

I strongly dislike 1x256X2+1. Especially since the soups don't show correctly, and that's a shame because I was really looking forward to seeing the ov_s16. In C1 that soup produces an MWSS, so that's cool.

In all seriousness, I don't get what's so bad about D4_+1 that they can't just search it.

Will objects with periods higher than 100 ever be animated?

First rule on Catagolue with a B1 transition bot no B0 transition:

https://catagolue.appspot.com/census/b1 ... 32x32_Test

And yes, this is a rule where a single dot explodes:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 1, rule = B1e2-a34-w5-a678/S0123-a4-q56-a7e
o!

Calcyman, what about making a search bar at the census page that searches for rules?

Does anybody know where calcyman got the "alien rule" icon?

I drew it myself in (I'm ashamed to say) Microsoft Paint.

Idea: A setting that notifies you when a new object is discovered with some constraints (rules, types, apgcodes with wildcards) via the website

Suggestion: A "complete SL Discoveries" list that displays a list of ALL still lives discovered by the user, not just ones that are more than 30 cells. I have discovered 3+ SLs with cells < 30 and I'm sad those didnt get listed, and I've lost them (They used to be in my signature)

Glider syntheses for still-lifes in B3/S23 with population <= 16 are now available as links on the object pages: https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xs ... 3ego/b3s23

I'm using Dave Greene's package incorporating Chris Cain's synthesis displayer and Chris Rowett's viewer:
http://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic. ... ent#p49706

This is a temporary measure until Catagolue is sufficiently clever to handle glider syntheses natively.

Ooh, cool! The LifeWiki infoboxes are linking to those as well now.

Nice! So it's still life syntheses only up to 16 bits, plus maybe a few small oscillators -- no Cthulhu synthesis yet... chris_c's online version produces syntheses for beacon and blinker, anyway.

There are actually several hundred mentions of xp2 objects in the package, but if I remember right they're limited to the p2 objects that come in handy as an intermediate step while building the still lifes. So apparently it was never necessary to build a toad, for example, to produce any still life up to 16 bits. But it _was_ necessary to build xp2_y3352y469d2sgzwgggy8ey01023zey1ezw111, for example. Would it be easy to add glider synthesis links in Catagolue for all these intermediate objects? -- or maybe only for the intermediate objects that are not constellations? There are also a few objects with bit counts greater than 16 where glider syntheses could be given -- e.g, xs18_wggo8brz696.

It would be nice to be able to allow more people to help collect glider syntheses. I briefly understood the syntax of the one-liners in the display_synth.js file, which look like this for the 18-bit still life above, for example:

"xs10_32qr;xs18_wggrb8oz696;0;;9,-61,9,-46;-3,-64,9,-29;3,-58;7,4,-1,0,0,-1",

Not sure what a utility script might look like, that could easily allow someone to generate one of these lines, or sets of lines if there are several stages, to build an omnibus or Cthulhu or whatever. Or maybe a script like that is already available (?).

Can there be added a list of all rules censused and their # of objects (maybe as a Page 2, Page 3, etc. added onto the main census page)?

Is it just me or are blue hauls in Life no longer a thing?

Blue hauls are still a thing.

B3/S23 object pages now include copyable RLE and embedded LifeViewer support.

Nice! Things just keep getting better all the time.

The viewer does take up a lot of screen real estate, though. Might you consider adding a [[ THUMBNAIL ]] tag?

I've now separated the viewer and the RLE codebox, so the viewer is now in the upper-left corner as a thumbnail (replacing the animated SVG) and the codebox is below the columnar preamble:

https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp ... y811/b3s23

I can confirm muzik's bug on Chromium (running on Debian Linux).

Is it possible to make the lifeviewer and the code box fit the Catagolue colour scheme similarly to how the animations did?

Looks good. Have you experimented with [[ THUMBSIZE 2 ]] and/or something like [[ GPS 8 AUTOSTART ]]? And [[ TRACK x/p y/p ]], I suppose, for moving patterns?

It currently uses THUMBSIZE 2, yes:

Code: Select all

            writer.println("function do_it() {");
            writer.println("    var rle = cells_to_rle(decodeCanon(\"" + apgcode + "\"));");
            writer.println("    var prerle = \"#C [[ THEME 6 GRID GRIDMAJOR 0 THUMBLAUNCH THUMBSIZE 2 ]] <br>\\n\";");
            writer.println("    prerle += \"#C [[ COLOR BACKGROUND 192 255 238 ]] <br>\\n\";");
            writer.println("    prerle += \"#C [[ COLOR ALIVE 0 0 0 ]] <br>\\n\";");
            writer.println("    prerle += \"#C [[ COLOR DEAD 160 221 204 ]] <br>\\n\";");
            writer.println("    prerle += \"#C [[ COLOR GRID 160 221 204 ]] <br>\\n\";");
            writer.println("    prerle += \"#C [[ COLOR GRIDMAJOR 160 221 204 ]] <br>\\n\";");
            writer.println("    var code = document.getElementById('code0');");
            writer.println("    code.innerHTML = rle;");
            writer.println("    var code1 = document.getElementById('code1');");
            writer.println("    code1.innerHTML = prerle.concat(rle);");
            writer.println("  }");
            writer.println("</script>");

My suggestion is that there should be more objects (in pages) in the top 100 most common objects.
