Why aren't quadratic growth patterns categorised just like linear growth patterns are?

I suppose it's because they're even more difficult for the search script to analyse and separate than linear growth patterns, and clean (non-explosive) quadratic patterns don't occur naturally on Catagolue anyway (I'm pretty sure zz_QUADRATIC is the rarest of all the zz classes, for example).

I'm sure if you came up with a good classification scheme with all the desired properties (I'll leave it as an exercise for you to name what they are), implemented the necessary logic in C++, and made sure it was both fast and bug-free, Calcyman would appreciate a pull request.

I think part of the problem is that apgsearch currently is only able to classify patterns as zz_QUADRATIC as a guess based on the shape of the population graph, with slightly different rates resulting in zz_EXPLOSIVE, etc. It doesn't have any way to "resolve" these patterns, and based on observing apgsearch speed changes I think it would be rather difficult to modify the current code so that could do that in a reasonable time frame - it looks like any quadratic pattern could take >15 seconds to resolve per occurrence, and many such patterns aren't even identified as zz_QUADRATIC or zz_EXPLOSIVE, but simply freeze apgsearch entirely.

It occasionally changes. Before now I placed a hash of a message there to act as a digital signature to prove my identity on the Discord.

I hope I did this right, it's D4_+2 but one corner is completely missing, to hopefully spawn objects that are half symmetric and half not. I probably won't search it too in-depth. Here's two results

Why don't the (at least two) objects I discovered (8th and 6th soup if I remember correctly) in this haul show up in my discovered objects list?

It’s because the discoveries aren’t in the required size range (>=30 bits/<=19 bits?), unless I’m referring to the wrong objects.

Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere, but can someone remind me of the specific conditions needed for a haul to be saved (marked blue)?

It needs to contain an early occurrence of an object, and for someone or something to have invoked /attribute to determine who created that haul. Of course, if the haul had already been automatically deleted by this point, then the /attribute call wouldn't be able to identify the owner.

That 'someone or something' can be either a person with a web browser, or Ivan Fomichev's twitterbot, or Catagolue itself.

As a side-effect, /attribute is the same process which populates peoples' user pages with 'discoveries'.

Could apgsearch be made to support isotropic one-dimensional rules? Having to search b026s1/1x256 is kind of flawed. Not having such pseudo-objects catalogued would also reduce haul sizes, and as a result load on the site overall, significantly.

The difficulty of separating pseudo-objects is a common one (look at the censuses of non-CGoL-like rules with common spaceships, you'll see lots of trivial flotillas), and one that's been discussed before. One thing that makes it more difficult (and is relevant in this case) is the choice not to separate oscillators when they share an envelope, because this would hinder the finding of RROs.

As objects get rarer, why don't we start including discoveries on people's pages for *all* objects, rather than everything but xs<30's?

New discoveries are getting rarer, but they're certainly not rare yet. Compare my latest stats update on the wiki; there were (if I didn't miscount now) 223 new objects C1 that week alone.

But that list also counts xs<30s; only six of those 223 objects would show up as "discoveries" on Catagolue.
