A link back to the corresponding LifeWiki article on each applicable page seems like a neat addition for anyone interested in the history/applications/etc. of certain patterns.

Also, maybe "This pattern is a x", "This pattern is periodic with period x", etc. could link to the respective lifewiki pages as well.

RLEs are now displayed for all rules beginning with 'b'.

Did you have apgsearch just run the same 1x8 line 10000 times and call that a haul? :?

Yeah, that doesn't count in my opinion.

I am relatively new to the Catagolue but I am confused with some of my soups. It appears that for C2_2 the pattern that should be in my soup are not in there.

E.g. this still life
https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xs ... fgkc/b3s23
should be in this soup

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 32, rule = B3/S23
obbbboobobbboboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
oobbboobbobooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
boobooooobbbbobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
boobooboooobbobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
obooooooobobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
booobboobbbbbboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bobboobboooobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
obobbbooboobbooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
oobobbooboobboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
oooooobbbbbbboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
boooobobbobbbooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbooooooobboobbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
booobooobooboobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbobbbooobooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
boobbbboobooobbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbobobbboooboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbboobooobbbobobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobboooboobbbboob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooobooobbbobbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobooboobooobooob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobboobbooooooobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooobbbobboboooob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbboobbbbbbboooooo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbboobbooboobboboo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooobbooboobbbobo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbboboooobboobbob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboobbbbbboobbooob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobobooooooobo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobobboooobooboob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobobbbboooooboob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooobobboobbboo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboobobbboboobbbbo!
but I don't see it.

This also happens for various other objects like this p4 oscillator:
https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xp ... 33w7/b3s23

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 32, rule = B3/S23
bobbbbobobbbbboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbooboobbboooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
obbobboobbbbbbbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bboobbbooboooooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbobbooboobooboobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bboobbbboobboooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bobooboobobboooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bobooboooobbobbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
obbbobooboobbbbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
obbooobbbbooobbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbooobobobobbbbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
oobbooobbobbobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
ooooboobbobbooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
oooobbbooobbbobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
obooboobobobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bboooboooboooobobbbbbbbbbbbbbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboboooobooobooobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobobobooboobo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobbbooobbboooo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooobbobbooboooo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobobbobbooobboo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobbbbobobobooobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobbooobbbbooobbo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobbbbooboobobbbo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobbobbooooboobob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboooobbobooboobob$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboooobboobbbboobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooboobooboobbobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbooooooboobbboobb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbobbbbbbboobbobbo$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboooobbbooboobbbb$
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbboobbbbbobobbbbob!
The question is, if I am doing something wrong, or if something is wrong with my apgsearch?

For C1 soups everything is fine, e.g. this still life:
https://catagolue.appspot.com/object/xs ... a871/b3s23

Strange things have been happening with APGSearch. Reporting valid objects that don't actually appear in the soup.

No one really knows what's happening.
Someone should search D2_x, D2+1, and D2+2 and see if any new ships pop up from unrelated soups.

FWIW, this only seems to be happening with apgluxe 4.x. So perhaps for the time being, it would be advisable to switch back to 3.28, at least for semi-totalistic rules.

A not-so-minor-after-all milestone -- Catagolue's got more than 4,000 distinct rulestrings in its database now. The exact number is 4,002 at the moment.

This is not the same as distinct rules, mind, due to a lack of rulestring folding/normalization/canonicalization on Catagolue's part; for instance, b37cs23 and b37-es23 refer to the same the same CA, but the resulting censuses are not merged. And that's not counting results deliberately submitted by certain jokesters -- results for such rulestrings as b3s232323222332aceikn3232333 or b3aijnqrkyces2ainkce3aijnqrkyce, say, both of which are actually Conway Life in disguise.

I don't know how many distinct rules there are right now. Finding out would be easy enough, though. FWIW I also don't know which one the 4,000th rulestring was, but the last five additions were, in no particular order:

Code: Select all

b2ce3-ce4ces2ce3-ce4ce
b2e3ai4t5e6ciks1c2-a3-a4-aeit5ikr
b2ein3aikq67es1c23-nqr4ci6ci
b2n3acijn4ijkntz5ijkq6ace8s2eik3-ckqy4yz5kr
b3-ckq5cs2-c34ci
so if you wanted to, you could check which had its first hauls submitted when, and thus find out which one was number 4,000.

Anyhow, congrats to all involved, and a BIG thanks to Calcyman, whose efforts enabled the collection of all this incredibly valuable data in the first place.

Snowflakes just made it to the most popular list! Mostly thanks to 2718281828. If I recall correctly it is the first rule to ever achieve this.

Unfortunately, that means the formatting of the site is screwed up, until calcyman fixes it.

Two features I would like to see on Catagolue:
  • Being able to see discovery lists for all rules, not just b3s23.
  • A page for each user that lists all the censuses they have contributed to.

Catagolue's B3/S23/C1 census recently passed 10 trillion (or billion, depending on how you count) soups, BTW -- quite an accomplishment, congratulations to all contributors, and extra-special congratulation and thanks to Calcyman for running the whole thing.

No, he said soups, not objects. The b38s23/C1 census has 10 trillion objects, but only 687 billion soups.

Oops, my bad. Then again, B38/S23/C1 did reach 10 trillion objects quite recently, I assume.

Also wanted to ask where you could view census backups.

There exists a mirror site which has been mentioned on these forums (its what apgsearch attempts to access if it can't reach catagolue.appspot.com). I don't recall what it is off the top of my head, but I'll let you know if I find out.

EDIT: It's gol.hatsya.co.uk, though I see Danny already answered that in the time I was looking for it.

On Catagolue itself. For instance, here's the backup of B3/S23/C1 for 2018-01-01.

Note that only B3/S23/C1 has backups generated automatically every day; for other rules/symmetries, you have to tell Catagolue that you want it to create a backup. See the LifeWiki for more information.

In this thread, another user reports a weird bug where he is unable to submit hauls as anything but "Anonymous", even with a valid Payosha key.
