John Conway didn't discover the glider, technically. As Conway said in telling the story at one point, it was "some guy" (Richard K. Guy) who first noticed a group of five cells moving diagonally, while manually tracking what happened to the R-pentomino.

Whoops... Stupid me... I did know that Richard Guy found the glider... i just thought no other life enthusiasts were almost a hundred years old... Yeah, my hasty progression of thoughts went "GoL? 100 years old? John Conway! Hmm... December!" Yeah that's pretty embarrassing...

Conway's still a spring chicken, though -- he won't even be eighty, even in December. I'm sure he's still young and spry enough to be able to tell you what day of the week your birthday is on, in just a few seconds...!

So what will we actually do with this day? A meetup? Some sort of celebration? I have no idea...




What would be cool is if the game were well known enough for maths lessons in schools to be dedicated to it for just one day. They used to do something similar on pi day (which was yesterday, but of course I had a test) so it would be cool, but that's just my imagination
