So I figured out how to do this thanks to Mike Stay on YouTube - highlight a region and click the metafier.py script. When I did this I crashed Golly. http://git.io/eEyehQ

Oh, yes, Python is completely useless for metafying large patterns. The way I built meta-metacells (for example) was by writing a C++ program specially designed to perform operations on quadtrees instead of cell lists.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!
