One place to start is giffer.lua in Golly's Scripts/Lua/ folder. It will probably make something too small (like the animated GIF I have now -- first time I've ever bothered to upload one!) and if you don't keep the number of frames low, you'll overflow the skimpy 25KB limit.

Once you have an animated GIF with the frames you want, you can resize it with various online tools, change timing, take out frames, and so on. You can also save frames one at a time and stitch them together with the same online tools.

And maybe now someone will tell you a better way to do it -- maybe giffer.py, if you have Python installed. Looks like that has more options than the Lua version. (I haven't really been paying attention -- my idea is that if I ignore avatars long enough, maybe they'll go away.)
