"New" C/3 Ship?

Post by Platypus5 » January 15th, 2012, 6:56 pm

I am not sure if anyone has found this ship yet, nor if it even counts as "new." It was sort of staring me in the face, so I would be surprised if I am the first person to find it...

It turns out that the arm on our favorite p45 c/3 puffer are actually 1/2 of a ship unto itself.

It is a pretty small, mundane p3 ship. Doesn't appear to have any interesting sparks...

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 12, rule = B3/S23

Unsorted C/3 search output? Somewhat newish C/3 edgesparker? give it to me, and my "battleships" just may have a use for it. :)

Well, it's not in the golly collection of c3 orthogonal ships...

I also didn't see it any of the other collections of patterns, be it jslife, LifeP, or David Bell's big box of C3 stuff.

Well it is certainly nice to see a new small symmetrical c/3 ship. It shows once again that we have not yet exhausted the supply of interesting small patterns.

Thanks!

By the way, I found another ship in the same spirit. This one seems to have some sort of spark at the back.....

On another note, I have managed to reduce the height of a p54 puffer engine dramatically. You see, the "engine" is really just a ship and a tagalong. After searching through discarded, unsorted c3 ship searches, I found a much smaller ship that could replace the front of the p54 engine. I still don't know how to get rid of those pesky arms, especially since I don't have any search programs. It is still not as small as the p27 derived stuff, but, hey, the p27 one can't make p24 blocks!

I'm not much of a ship search person, but you know what would be swell? Some kind of annotated ship sub-component lists (something along the lines of "wing A links to any type-2 body, as well as the linking edge of wing C, or the edge spark of wing F")…

Much of the "known" c/3 technology is undocumented because there are a lot of ships, many of which are fairly uninteresting.
Tropylium wrote:Some kind of annotated ship sub-component lists…
A little of this was done for c/3 in the mid 1990's, but computers are fast enough and c/3 components are generally small enough, that one can search for a needed connection using programs such as LifeSearch. This sort component list would be more useful for higher-period ships, where components are usually harder to find.

What about higher period c/3 ships? Although I suppose they would be easier to engineer from low-period c/3 ships.

There are very few known higher-period c/3 ships, or any ships with periods above 5. Current period-6 c/3 ships are mostly composed of some p6 component supported by a c/3 component, and there is little in the way of connections between known p6 components. In fact, the first completely* p6 c/3 ship was found by Josh Ball a little over a year ago (see here). For higher period c/3 spaceships, there are even fewer known components. As far as I know, these are the only known "basic" spaceships that are entirely* p6 or above (excluding Corderships):

New c/3 frontends in general are not considered novel, and that was a 10-year bump.
