It's not a memory issue, or anything like that. For some reason various things either won't run, won't compile, or won't compile correctly no matter what I do. This includes LLSSS and my own program qfind. At this point I think I need to install a fresh operating system. I should just bite the bullet do that soon.

Carefully comparing rows (or really letting `pd-fold` do the hard work) I see it's actually 2.25 rows of strict c/4d. TBD if it's solvable, if it can be made to survive the ignition reaction's debris even so, etc., but it shows how the existing tools could attempt this sort of search.

I assume it's worth searching both with and without that back cell on the center diagonal and I guess I'm gonna plan to run search lines from 2 to 7 generations of interaction and perfect back clearance (better chances of surviving reaction). I'll of course post more here if anything even resembling viable shows up.

EDIT: Having looked at it a little in golly it's quite clear that partial is doomed as it's going to immediately collide like 2 generations later. I think the general search plan is maybe still reasonable, I just may have to force a few more generations of "interaction" (survival) or a few more off cells or something.

One can of course run LLSSS searches in (a) B3!5n/S23 for the intersection of B3/S23 and B35nS23 or in (b) B3!5n/S23!4k to prohibit either glider-like 3x3 block in any orientation. LLSSS did not yet allow INT rules at the time I started this project or I likely would have just done (b).
I gave both to 120G. Both seemed pretty viable but did not solve as single-shot searches. It's possible some careful branching could do it, but I'm not sure, the searches just seemed to go on and on...

One issue is that I don't known how to allow for large amounts of ship above the interaction point. It would be nice if a standard f2b search with empty sides could be suddenly "converted" at any depth to interact with the nearby soba ships. Does that make sense?

While it has been another year I don't have any more computer than I did then and while many of the search tools have improved in one way or another I don't think any of them are applicable to this search. Most of the intervening improvements I can remember are usability and PD stuff. The last major changes that might influence this sort of search would be recentering and one-bit-at-a-time and both of those predate the last crack at this.

Sort of. Depending on exactly how you're envisioning it you might be asking for "K-gram" edges. For this feature this you provide a grid 2 columns wide and however long and a critical W lookback size, "K". The grid is sliced up into blocks that are 2 U by (K + 1) W and the edge is extended in any way that is locally made up of those blocks, which is to say to decide how the edge may be extended it looks up the last K rows in a table built from (K + 1)-size blocks.

I generally use this to float a seam e.g. a grid like this in a c/2 f2b search could be used to start the top of the edge with some number of zeros but then eventually cross a diagonal edge seam and transition to parallel stripes edge:

And then do something like `--right-edge kgram:14:edge.grid` where `edge.grid` is the filename and 14 is the value of K above. A value of nh_w_size - 1 (which is 14 for 3c/7 f2b) is usually fine, but depending on your edge I could maybe imagine wanting a different value (larger than that is going to have issues where the state in most configurations won't start with enough rows to work). The log file should show you the (K + 1)-size blocks it has sliced your edge into which will hopefully make it clear whether or not it's acceptable.

The most common problem with this sort of use is nothing forces the transition to actually happen and so your search may just keep on forever before the critical point. Worse than that any configured ends may fire before as well which is probably not what you want. Additionally a non-transition use like this could actually loop back on itself pretending to interact multiple times. This is perhaps less likely to actually happen for this edge but it's a theoretical problem with the mechanism.

The other obvious choice for structuring such a search is to fix the position of that interaction in the original input file but then use increasing amounts of top pad to move it further and further down the effective search field.

Did you remember if you ever attempt a symmetric search for that p7 soba-based backrake idea? I can only find an asymmetric partial result here.

I did but the partials were no better than asymmetric and I did not bother posting them. I had to dig but I mentioned this somewhere buried in the spaceship thread.

I've used "wrong answers only" to run this so it won't just keep finding zeros forever. You'll notice `1.in` has one extra W row of zeros which this mode will refuse to allow (forcing some nonzero cell in that W row). WAO requires an extra "top pad" that it will prune your file by which I don't want here (so "00"). When not using WAO to split up by where the first error occurs we want to reduce left and right pad to zero and take all first error indices. Finally `--wao-left-edge-errors` allows first mismatch to occur inside the edge which is relevant our left edge of odd.

It is exciting in that it reaches 4.25 Y rows of strict c/4d and survives 7 generations of interaction including (subjectively) two distinct bounces off of the fuse, but it is clear playing around in golly that it's gonna collide with the burning fuse bits almost immediately after.

When perturbing a small object it was somewhat more likely the reaction was smaller but the reactions for lighting fuses seem to be very explodey...

I guess I shall plan to run these to 60G and probably 120G and maybe run even higher interaction generation counts. It gets ugly to bump the number of interacting generations because I either have to have a giant light cone of expensive wildcards or make a rather uneducated guess on where to truncate the expansion of the wildcards. They'll almost certainly need to proceed NW at light speed (as any fuse burning reaction would need to) and so I'm not even really sure I could save that much.

I wonder if we might have better luck trying to control the fuse-burning-ending reaction with sparkers to try to get something out there rather than looking for a new custom catalyst ship at the back. Keith, can you try modifying this ship to bring the glider-emitting convoy closer to the front of the wickstretcher?
As a note to myself a small change at the top here reducing the NW/SE spread between the emitted glider and the fuse end makes a big change in how much work happens after to move the glider NW so even though this looks pretty close already, every row counts.

I'm more a "make a giant, messy solution" sort of guy or maybe occasionally a "optimize one direction of clearance at the extreme expense of every other metric" sort of guy. What are you hoping to use a "reduce"d version of this in? I could try to optimize the NW clearance similar to the other sparker if that is the sort of thing you're after.

EDIT: Even to do that requires some sort of notion of identity of what "this sparker" is. How much of which generations would you say define it or perhaps what is an example reaction which you'd like preserved?

Improving the NW clearance while maintaining the full NE clearance is what I'm after. That seems to be a particularly nice spark, and improved NW clearance would allow it to be used in a wider variety of situations.

It is exciting in that it reaches 4.25 Y rows of strict c/4d and survives 7 generations of interaction including (subjectively) two distinct bounces off of the fuse, but it is clear playing around in golly that it's gonna collide with the burning fuse bits almost immediately after.

When perturbing a small object it was somewhat more likely the reaction was smaller but the reactions for lighting fuses seem to be very explodey...

I guess I shall plan to run these to 60G and probably 120G and maybe run even higher interaction generation counts. It gets ugly to bump the number of interacting generations because I either have to have a giant light cone of expensive wildcards or make a rather uneducated guess on where to truncate the expansion of the wildcards. They'll almost certainly need to proceed NW at light speed (as any fuse burning reaction would need to) and so I'm not even really sure I could save that much.
