I was not aware of that one, but the standard 3-glider method works just as well. Both insert at the minimum possible separation. Here are the other LWSS, MWSS, and HWSS syntheses I know that can insert spaceships at minimum separation (14, 16, and 18 generations respectively). Two had to be slightly tweaked:

chris_c's collection on GitHub is pretty darn current, and fairly easy to go look things up in -- you don't have to download the whole collection to find a specific gun.

(For the variable guns you might have to make some adjustments to get an actual gun pattern, though. That would be a good low-priority project if someone wanted to tackle it, building out actual RLE for each gun period up to 1000 where there isn't an entry in the fixed folder.)

If you just want to see if a newly built gun is better than what's in the collection, just multiply the all-phases bounding box length times width and check that against the number for that period, in the README on the landing page.

EDIT: perhaps it was brought up in a discussion thread relating to said converters? Unfortunately I can't find anything with the forum search (partially due to "glider" being ignored as too common, lol), but if anyone else is curious I very clearly remember one post in said thread containing both of Guam's converters

It's probably been found before, but I was just playing around and noticed this. I was particularly bugged because I couldn't clean the second beehive.

I don't believe so, but the synthesis wiki hasn't been updated in quite some time (I think waiting for a robust way to handle new records semi-automatically) and the Methuselah section in particular hasn't really had much attention paid to it; most synthesis attempts are focused on still-lifes and oscillators.

I know of one different 3-glider synthesis for Thunderbird, found by Extrementhusiast on 2015-07-04. All the others are improvements. Very nice! I was not aware of 7468M; I will add it. I am trying to list all important methuselahs below 10 bits. (Unfortunately, I've been somewhat mind-bogglingly slow in updating my site, but things are starting to come together, it shouldn't be that much longer.)

I know of one different 3-glider synthesis for Thunderbird, found by Extrementhusiast on 2015-07-04.
I am working on the enumeration of all 3G reactions, and I got all the results by looking at the ashes. The mentioned reactions are only representatives, for some there are multiple options. For the Thunderbird I have e.g.:

An exhaustive examination of all 3G reaction has, to the best of my knowledge, never been done. Dave Buckingham did a fairly comprehensive study of them back around the 1980s or so, but the fact that occasional new 3-glider syntheses have come up over the past few decades (e.g. pentadecathlon, bi-pond, infinite growth, and switch engine, plus the ones you posted here) show that he didn't find all of them.

There are three things I'm personally particularly interested in with regards to 3 glider collisions, which haven't really been studied in depth - syntheses of pseudo-still-lifes (because few people care about them, so they are frequently overlooked), constellations of 2 objects (because these are frequently used in larger syntheses, and making 2 at once can save a glider or two off the recipe), and 3-glider syntheses of certain useful sparks - hopefully with no additional debris, although in some cases, the sparks can be useful enough that an additional cleanup glider or two can be tolerated.

I have a few hundred sparks (mostly from Buckingham's research), and around a thousand constellations (mostly from mine), but those aren't very well organized, and come from haphazard, rather than systematic research.

Luckily there are only a few collisions that do that -- a total of seven, including the three B-heptomino outputs and 2-glider mess that Sokwe mentions, plus the two kickback reactions and the TL+glider reaction. The kickback collisions are relatively easy to get a complete enumeration for, but the B-heptominoes and the others seem fairly painful.

Even an enumeration that excludes the toughest cases would be really useful. @2718281828, does your analysis start from two-glider collisions, or are you using some other method?

It looks like you've recorded a good large subset of three-glider collisions already, to find those methuselah syntheses. Does anything happen to have the ash signature of this part of a loafer recipe?

Seems like sorting things out based on the ash will work really well in some cases, but not so well if someone is looking to replace, say, expensive sparks in a glider recipe with cheaper sparks. If you have to look through all reactions that end with zero population, that doesn't narrow the field very much...

Given a good database of three-glider collisions, though, it should be possible to reprocess and re-index it in all kinds of different ways.

If I got it correctly the relevant part of the 5 glider reaction is

I looked for the resulting ash (including symmetries) in my 3G collision files, but the result is negative. And I should have almost all 3G collisions, only 'a couple' of late interacting 2glider mess+third glider (after more than 500 generations) are missing, but they very like won't produce this pattern.

Instead of reducing the loafer synthesis, perhaps we could try reducing the [url=chttp://www.conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php ... 325#p46308]copperhead synthesis[/url]. I tried and failed to reduce it using 3 glider collisions, but I'm wondering if we can with a more complete set. So do you have any collisions that creates these patterns?:

Thanks for checking! I didn't really expect anything workable would show up in the 3G collisions -- even if the ash signature had happened to show up, quite likely the reaction wouldn't have been compatible with the other half of the loafer recipe.

I have somewhat higher hopes for a workable solution with four gliders, since the search space is several orders of magnitude bigger. It seems like a good goal will be to produce a set of gencols input files, with a verified list of all the relevant 3-glider collisions of each type, say 3G-NW-NW-NE.col and 3G-NW-NE-SW.col.

Maybe sorted in order of the population of the final output, or something along those lines? That would be a good fraction of the work needed to set up a "hashseq" database and search utility. To limit the size of the database, the 3G collision files could be truncated at some reasonable point, leaving out all the almost certainly useless huge ugly explosions, and then pick a reasonable range of locations for the fourth glider.

-- Thinking about it again, it's probably worth keeping 72 separate sets of 3G collisions, 71 for the different 2G collisions and one more for all the simultaneous ones, and split each of the 72 sets up into categories along the lines of NW-NW-NE and NW-NE-SW. That allows 4G searches to be customized for each group, over time, and a lot of those could be exhaustive searches.

(Apologies -- I've wandered off into hand-waving about vaporware again.)
