The following is an example of the kinds of interactions I really want. You can see that each hit produces a glider and leaves a constellation that can be hit later on. I just want to get the original constellation back at any position and orientation. But except for the two I know about and larger patterns like snark, I can't find anything. There are many collisions that produce another small constellation and a glider. This is the longest chain I was able to find, but it does not cycle. (Patterns in the bottom row show the result I want at a possibly different orientation.)

@pcallahan How about just requiring that sum(input gliders) <= sum(output gliders)?
i.e. when you have two or more glider outputs, you can have one (or more) reactions without any glider outputs.
perhaps sum(input gliders) <= sum(output gliders) - c for some constant c, for controlling difficulty.

I agree that could work, particularly if later gliders just fix something assuming a previous collision had an excess. In practice, the more complex it is, the less likely it will ever fit together. I was hoping (though I've tried this before) that there might be a simple constellation just over my past search horizon that could reappear after a few steps. It would not be likely to appear at the same place or orientation, but could be reset over a few steps. The fact that the biloaf does this is very nearly miraculous. The only thing I thought I had going was that the last time I searched, computers were much slower.

I can also try adding simple catalysts like eater 1 and blocks, but I am not sure I want to go down that rabbit hole. And it's not as useful to have a fixed catalyst if the damaged/restored part gets moved.

If it weren't for the fact that you want gliders after each step, I'd say a Crystal would nearly work.

Yes, but glider conservation is the whole point of this dubious exercise. And if it weren't for the fact that I have to pay my mortgage, I would have much more time to work on it.

Anyway, in the interest of never doing this search again, here is what I found by colliding gliders with still life constellations that fit in a 9x9 box with 18 cells or fewer and keeping cases when the still life cells survive. First off, there were 70383 eaters, nearly all variations of eater-1. There were 747044 boat bits.

There were 21 eaters that were not eater-1, but were all trivial variations on a known eater. I filtered these by checking which did not have a stable population after 38 generations.

Different unsure discovery, so I am starting a new post.

Has anyone else seen/used this glider collision that turns a bheptomino? It emits one glider and does the turn in 60 steps, making it useless for new oscillators, but coincidentally compatible with p30 components.

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
o11b3o$b2o9bo$2o10bobo$13b2o!
With considerable effort (for me and not for the timing gurus among us), I managed to construct this pattern that drives it around a p240 track with guns and gets the output gliders out of harm's way with pentadecathlons EDIT: I replaced the 180 degree buckaroos since these are simpler and less of a distraction from the real action in the center. It looks like I should be able to recirculate the gliders back as long as I can adjust diagonal and phase. There is plenty of room between incoming and outgoing gliders.

Since there is no net loss of gliders, can the whole thing be made to work with only reflectors (p6, p30, p15, etc.)? I am too exhausted now to answer but maybe someone has a quick yes/no/already done in 1992.

Here's the period 240 bheptomino turner stabilized with only pentadecathlons and snarks. I lucked out on phase shifts. I haven't tried to compact the size. (EDIT: I just replaced it with a smaller version.) I wish the pentadecathlons didn't need to be so close to the bheptomino turner, but that seems unavoidable to prevent a collision.

Obviously, if you just want p240, this a very silly way to get it.

Well, the pis do pull the blinker back, so it would have to go east, but that doesn’t do us any good because the gliders are going nw and sw, so I would Imagine it needs to be huge.

Also, it would need to be modified so that n gliders going in make >n gliders going out.

That's a nice one isn't it? It's been discovered a couple of times already. At least I didn't completely forget about it this time around. It's in the period doubler stamp collection, which probably should be annotated better so it's easier to find out where things come from.

Along with the bronco and rectifier, that's another good reason to include eater3s in the /data/bespoke directory of slmake.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Yikes. Sounds good in theory, but... oh, wait, eater3s don't cost 72 gliders any more. Is there any more recent recipe that's more slow-salvo compatible than this one from 2016?

The loaf has to be built after the large catalyst. For the orientation where the loaf is behind the catalyst from the point of view of the slow salvo, maybe it would make sense to do the construction with a two-stage slow salvo, like the one on the right below?

Code: Select all

Yup, that should be the only expensive orientation.

Did you ask slsparse about dropping a loaf behind the main 30-bit still life, though? It doesn't look totally impossible that some known recipe might happen to reach that far over.

Maybe this belongs in "Thread for vintage/retro patterns" but I found this potentially useful p30 device based on a collision between one glider and a p30 stream.

Code: Select all

x = 55, y = 53, rule = B3/S23

o11b2o9bobo$16b2o12b2o9b2o!
It's the sort of thing it would not surprise me to see in an ancient pattern by DRH if he found it useful, but I found it using gencols and don't recall seeing it before.

When the glider hits the p30 stream, it starts a reaction that deletes 3 gliders This provides 3 p30 windows that can be read as inverted bits.

It also leaves a tub off to the left of the stream, and there is enough clearance to collide it later and adapt bit streams with different timing. I haven't figured out if it's useful for something I'm working on. It's not even particularly elegant, but I can see it fitting into the p30 toolset to provide fanout out and fix timing incompatibility.

It requires 150 repeat time, 120 because of the gliders it removes and another cycle to allow for removal of the tub.

Driven by p150 guns from Dieter and Peter's collection.

I've seen many reactions where this exact catalytic reaction would be helpful, but for which a proper tool didn't exist--this will be helpful for something out there, for sure.

That reaction is useful—except I can’t find a use. This produces a R and would be a pre-BH->R, but it’s in a horrible location (i.e. instantly destroys catalyst) and doesn’t restore the bait.

This object has certainly been used as a catalyst before, such as by Noam Elkies in the first p22 oscillator:

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

I suspect, however, that it has gone underutilized and may indeed find some new significant use with a bit of searching. It is also known to work with a candlefrobra:

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

Has anyone seen this p30 glider-to-MWSS converter before? I found it running gencols on collisions of two gliders and stable perpendicular queenbee shuttles. It is stable with either or both gliders missing and can generate MWSS with p60 spacing.

In fact, it's a funny kind of and-gate, though that was not my intent. Zero or one glider has no effect. Two produces an MWSS.

There are other factors that might determine which to use. Does anyone have a p120 MWSS gun that beats both?

Yup, that does cut it down quite a bit:

But here's a smaller one by David Eppstein from the previous millennium (if you count 2000 as the last year of the thousand years, like you're officially supposed to):

If there are other cleverer ways to fit old and new pieces together to get a smaller bounding box, I'm not finding them:
